Speaking of parents, I have some bad news. We can't afford to give my dad a proper headstone. No one, including his other 8 kids (that excludes myself and the brother I grew up with, which would make 10 total) has made any donations. His church was supposed to help with the costs, but they haven't said anything. I don't know if they're waiting for us to set a price so they can set a goal, or if they just changed their minds. Mom wants to make a loan against the house or the car, but we can't do that.  The house is almost 50 years old and in disrepair, the car is too valuable to risk (it was my mom's mothers day present from my dad, and our only transportation), and we're several hundred-thousand dollars in debt from medical bills. We don't have medicare or any such thing, because we aren't eligible. I really don't know what to do.

Yeesh, sorry to hear that, you have my sympathies.
As for the medical debt, you might consider some form of debt relief or even bankruptcy.

No, unfortunately. Part of me is tempted to carve the damn thing myself, regardless of how much work that would take. The only thing in our price range is a tiny marker, like one given to a pet.

Iron I don't want to discourage you, but I'd check with the funeral home before you start. My experience with the one where I live is they can be pains in the ass with what you are and aren't allowed to do. It would suck to put that hard work and time in just for them to say you can't use it because it doesn't meet their standards.

Assuming I heard everything the guy at the monument store said, the lowest is $2000.

I still need to find out all of the information on money transference and whatnot. I don't know what the cheapest headstone looks like, but the one I was originally going for was just a black stone with the 'praying hands' design on it. I need to find out what that would cost. At this point, I'd just settle for anything that doesn't make it seem like we buried an animal there.
