Damn...little frustrated at the beginning since I couldn't remember at all who Chirpy was.
That entire trek through the outer metro was just damn creepy. And the exit from it just got creepier. Anyone smiling that much has got to have something wrong with them.
And it's affected Glimmer...
I hope Protégé has gotten a thing or two knocked into him about slavery after all this. That experience at the inner metro sure as hell seemed to have some sort of effect on him.

- synopsis:
- murky has fallen to wildcard in the pit in a surprise event match, on the brink of death he dreamed of shaking off his slavery with the support of all his friends, he wakes, emerging reborn with a healed body, although his radsickness and tainted lungs still torture him.with renewed vigor he is offered a position as protege's assistant, where he is sucked deeply into the slaver politics of phillydelphia. the race is on for him to do whatever he can to assist protege in his nomination to be voted the second in command after stern when red eye leaves. after some handy work with some charcoal, and a few underhoofed tactics by some big game players, the final vote comes down to protege and chainlink shackles. during the closed election meeting, old foes plot an assasination to remove protege from the picture, murky manages to twart their plot with a well timed headshot to his master. the chase is on, many truths are revealed including the end of the shades and there must be an expedition to the outside of Filly, can murky and protege pull murky's friends from chainlink's shackles? what lies within the metro?

I'm continuing to enjoy the look into the lives of the Fillydelphia foals, particularly as it relates to part of my headcanon.
I also can't help but agree with Protege. Sure, it's a very nice and sentimental idea, reuniting Chirpy Sum with his mother… but that reunification involves removing him from some of the best and safest living conditions in the Wasteland, conditions that he isn't exactly unhappy in, and dragging him through a dirty, irradiated city full of people who, if they could get away with it, would probably love to splatter one of the pampered brats to get back at Red Eye. And then, even if they successfully escape, they're out in the Wasteland; instead of happily learning mathematics, albeit separated from his mother, Chirpy Sum can likely expect to be learning the function relating desperation to radroach body part edibility. Assuming that he and his mother aren't recaptured, of course, in which case the whole thing has had no net effect other than hurting him. Oh, sure, you and I know that Sunshine and Rainbows is more or less just around the corner and all that, but hindsight is 20/20; as far as the characters (minus Pinkie) know, the only big change to expect in the Wasteland any time soon is the one that Red Eye's working for.
And then we make a quick transition from the best of Red Eye's realm to the worst. Nice thematic whatsit there, I think.
"Flight after flight, around the rusting cage elevator, we travelled down into the damp and dark void below us. I strained my ears, but all I heard were the drips or sounds of slavers passing by the maintenance room above us."
Hm. Inspired at all by this, or is it just that the design makes sense?
"Rectangular instead of curved other than the arch along the roof that held ancient ruined lines where trains must have once connected to. Below us was little other than metal rails and wooden blocks to run on, not the same powered ones we had seen before."
Hm, interesting. Wooden ties and overhead wire electrification? Curious design for a subway tunnel. Perhaps this was actually a subterranean part of the surface rail network? Though we've not heard before about them using overhead wire systems… Perhaps the wires just fell down and no one saw need to mention the remains? Interesting idea.
Also, the outer metro being open to the surface might help explain the things living in it.
"They even got a powered train down there to move and search."
"The ghoul said they'd mounted a cart down here, I think we may have found it."
Bit of a disagreement here.

Oho! Now this is interesting. Pistons imply some manner of heat or pressure engine. Hm… Or maybe cobbled-together linear magical motors?
"Twisting it, I heard a dull squirting warble of the engine mounted just behind us. Cutting out, spluttering, it died. He tried again...then again. Finally, with a roar that sounded shockingly loud in the quiet tunnels, it caught and surged into being."
Hm… If they're linear magical motors, I doubt that the engine would be making so much noise when they're not running. Unless the roar is a generator… Hm… The sound doesn't match a steamer, and I don't think that Equestria got them that small anyway… Well, if the pistons aren't lmms or steam, I bet that they're pneumatic (could be hydraulic, but air would be easier to come by than good hydraulic fluid), in which case the noise could be a compressor. The compressor could, in turn, be driven by a simple magical or electric rotary motor. Not sure why they didn't use the motor to drive the wheels directly, though; a pneumatic system is going to be wasting energy and putting a lot of it into heat. …Oh! Except that, if you've only got one motor and you also want to run pneumatic tools (which we've not seen elsewhere down here, but we've not seen portable power systems for them elsewhere down here either)… Maybe that's it? And it was simpler and cheaper to use a pneumatic drive system than to install gearing so that the motor could drive both the wheels and compressor.Not a perfect explanation, but it'll do until I hear yours. For now, on with the story!
Oh, shoot, I forgot that it didn't start right away. Hm… Why would the motor fail to spin up properly? Inrush current (or the magical equivalent) exceeded the capacity of something? Hm… that might work… And then one or more components warmed up, allowing the motor to start. There's probably a starting procedure that Protege didn't know… or possibly, to save complexity, this was the starting procedure. Anyway, this explanation ought to do, though I am now very interested to hear how this system works!
"scowling as the rail-wagon jarred and bounced over a broken junction. The engine cut out, sending us drifting forward on momentum. After a horrifying few seconds of silence, it spluttered into life again."
Makes sense for a loose connection, which is to be expected under these conditions.
"The engine cut out again, this time long enough that the wagon rolled to a halt on a flat stretch. The lamps died, leaving us isolated with the flickering green glow of my Pipbuck."
Hm… Good point: why are the lamps dependent on the motor running? I mean, I guess that they could be wired in series, but… would it have been that difficult to use parallel wiring and a switch? Eh, I can see how series might have been used, though; perhaps, even, the start switch, lights, motor, and battery are the only electrical components and are all in series. Though one would expect, then, Murky to mention the lights flaring in time with the compressor when the starting procedure is being run… Maybe he overlooked it? I'd definitely have put that technical detail in, but you're not me. Hm… Well, I'll read on for now, and hopefully I'll find some more data.

Well, firstly, while Protege ought to be checking the wiring rather than trying the same thing over and over again, it's understandable that he'd be preoccupied. Secondly, Murky definitely would mention the lights flaring here, I think, so it can't just be that the lights are in series with the motor. They seem to come on only when the motor is running steadily… Pressure sensor that interrupts current to the lamps when the pneumatic system is too low? That could be a good idea, actually; it would allow the batteries to only power the motor during starting. Presumably there's an independent switch among the controls, or even a switch to override the pressure sensor, and Protege just hasn't found it/them. Quite a detailed design, this; well done. I am yet more eager to hear about your process and anything that I may have missed.
Oh, and while we're on the subject, do you happen to know the track gauge of the inner metro? Equestrian Standard (Brunel, on Earth) or narrow (for Equestria) gauge? I assume that the outer metro, if it does indeed connect with the surface network (or did connect, at least) is ES… hm, unless it actually connected with a transit network separate from the Equestrian main line? …Oh! Or what if it originally connected with such a network, the old network being gradually demolished as the line went underground? So many possibilities!
Anyway, now back to reading!

…Okay, that makes the dead E.F.S. thing much worse. It's bad enough for something to have killed every creature down here… but cobwebs don't just appear. There are living things down here, and probably in range. Something here is jamming you.

there is so much to explain how but in essence, it was put in simply
my thoughts on why the series power set up...
YOu have two of the most hard ass slaver bosses grinding your slaver ass to set up a powered cart to traverse the subway system and they want it done quickly, you don't have too much knowledge of how power works other than power comes out here when it is on and you start hooking them up quickly.
parallel, while more effective and long term effective, would take too much time and wire to set up, so instead they just hook everything in a quick line.
laziness may be the mother of invention, but she also gave birth to expediency.

Actually, IIRC, the Nautilus was powered by batteries which were in turn charged by coal-fueled generators supplied by a mine that Captain Nemo built inside an extinct volcano reached by an underwater passage. The smoke went out the top and looked like just venting from the volcano. Depends on how the place is built. To pick a nearby example, my apartment has a concrete slab ceiling, so all the electrical conduits and such are mounted on the surface of it. Finally got around to reading the chapter. Not cause I didn't want to, just other stuff going on. The fact the new PH chapter came out tonight made me go "I need to read Murky."
The gushing over it by others didn't help. "YOU NEED TO READ THIS!" Oookay.

Funny thing happened as I was reading at first. When it got to the point where Protégé was pinning Murky to the wall going "You will no endanger those foals" I got up to take a shower. All the while thinking how naive Protégé is. Safe? The foals are safe? Oh yeah, in that motel where they get to learn and grow up to be "the future of Equestria" but... with slavers like Chainlink out there just hungry for fresh meat, the raiders in the ranks of the slaves, and Filly being a death city in and of itself, are they really more safe than being out in the waste with caring parents?
Protégé seeing just what Chainlink is doing, just how he's running the slaves under his command, being reminded of the living hell that being a slave really is. I admit, I got a bit of sadistic glee out of it. He's gonna break. He's breaking now, but when he finally does, I'm gonna love it. Now how is he gonna handle the break is what I'm interested in. How well will his faith in Red Eye hold up and how much of a blind eye will he turn to Murky's group escape after all this?
Love the use of "Nothing is scarier" here. The lack of description of just what in the hell those things are down there, chasing them, trying to get in, did make it more chilling.
As for the ending. Gotta say I saw it coming from all the build up. I mean, the repeat description of lifeless eyes and empty smiles, and Murky's friends on down there? Bound to happen. I like swicked's idea more, but mine was that Chainlink found and tapped into a mix of zebra magic/curses and technology. I also think that Murky is immune due to his taint changed hearing. Other then the more sensitive ears, or maybe because of it, Murky's mutation is a boon for once. Least that's what I think.
And I gotta wonder. Are the slaves truly on auto-pilot and not aware of what they're doing, or is it a "And I must scream" situation and they know fully what's going on and unable to do anything. So when Murky got to Glimmer and turned her to him, while she was saying "I have to get back to work." internally she was screaming and begging Murky to help her and the look on his face when he saw she wasn't herself was killing her on the inside.

He's addicted to control and I think would gladly carry out another's will if it gave him power over so many lives. It just makes him so comfortable, being on top like this, that he would never even think to look up and see the strings attached to him, as well.
And yet Murky, awake and wary, can hardly even feel this will. His soul is that of a free spirit.
I would love a scene where Chainlink was in his chair of dominance or something, commanding the many to serve a will that aligns with his own, and sees Murky and tries to command him.
...and it doesn't work.
Chainlink tries again, and again, and again... and Murky keeps shrugging it off and saying no.
So Chainlink tries to step down and show him who's the master and who's the slave... but the will doesn't like that. It wants him to keep work going, not deal with a single slave it can't even use. One it could barely use if dominated, anyway, due to said slave being so small and weak.
So it says no, and Chainlink... he can't disagree with it. He tries to fight back, but has no leverage. There's just this feeling of ease and desire to do what the will wants, not caring about Murky, and Chainlink gets all of a second of horrifying realization of who is in command of his life before the will wipes his brain of the thoughts and Chainlink settles back down to continue "his" command.
My goddesses, how wonderful would that be?!

Hm… I don't think that Red Eye's built up enough to be making gas turbines, and I don't think that Equestria every really got that far in combustion engine tech… More information please, Fuzzy?

FUCKIN' CALLED IT! "And I must scream!" AHAHAHAHAHA! That is like, THE textbook example of it right there. Somebody update the TV Tropes page! And remember that applies to all of the broken slaves. So when/if those things break in, all of them know what's happening but can't help themselves. I mean, less so than usual.
I can safely say I didn't see the memory orb thing though. Or saving her while down there. What I mean is that I half expected them to have to carry a "I must get back to work" Glimmer all the way to the surface before the fix.
Also, Sunny and Unity? With Sunny being little miss badass? Oh yes please. Though I do have doubt and worry for her safety now. I mean, more to than normal. More so than last time, which was more then the time before that.
Not much I can say about anything else. The plot thickens and the story grows more complex.
Though really, Murky should forget about hooking up with Littlepip. And even if her colt friend is already a part of Unity, it would just be weird now. I support the Murky/Sunny Day ship. Murky Day? Sunny Number Seven?

I am a bit curious just what those creatures are based on. The beeping implies artificial creations, or a form of cyborgs or just a collar of some sort. The rotten mint smell is... hell if I know, form of mutant? They either don't care about pain or bullet proof. Panicked shooting or not, some of the rounds had to hit and didn't seem to phase them.
Now a question of sentience, are their methods of killing truly that of mindless monsters, or sadistic beings that take pleasure in inflicting as much pain and terror in their pray...

Oh I think they are quite instinctual in their processes, otherwise they would not beat against the barricaded walls, not even xenomorphs would do that.
I can't help but think of the walrider from outlast
then again I also think of FOE Heros with walrider and walkirk, which makes sense but it detracts.
the beeping does fascinate me to no end, also these creatures must have some very acute senses or preternatural abilities to get to a pony by reaching through a wall.
perhaps the beeping is a form of echolocation and these creatures hunt by sound.
