Thinking of it, retard is maybe the least worst option, if we agree to never use it to describe a genuine mental condition, and to completely dissociate it from its original meaning ("mentally retarded").

Personally, I find that retardation in its original form is still just an insult and not a condition itself.
You look at someone with down-syndrome and say "they've got retardation" or someone with something similar and say "they've got retardation."

Unless there's an actual condition of retardation, I've known it more as a general way of acting / series of conditions than a single one specific one.


Edit: and oh, of course. It should never be used to try diagnose someone. To say someone is acting like a retard should only be used on the "normal" people who are acting idiotic.
People will mental conditions should have that condition respected.

Retard is originally from the french meaning. I believe it's 'to be late or slow'.

Alternatively, the first sense of the word is from the 1400's when it meant 'to keep back or impede'.
It's use as a description for a mental illness came along later.

On another subject... Should probably say this on the appropriate thread, but I built an Oil Siege with a Refinery module in the Sim City region we share. You can now build refineries to manufacture plastic if you want.

That came around very recently actually. Even in the 1970's it was simply a slang term for calling someone an idiot, first being used to call someone a 'social retard', meaning they had no knowledge of how to act in a social situation.

So if we want to look at the entire history of the word, people deeming it a mental disorder really should have chosen something that didn't already have a negative connotation. Which is why I have no issues about it being said.

I did, I don't believe him. No offense to Kipper, but he's not that kind of writer or person. He's already had enough horrible shit happen to Cherry, and if the spoiler is true, it would be... well, my level of character torment. He's a fantastic writer with a fantastic story, but I can't see him writing that, especially with Chance waiting back home, and Crimson still has stuff to deal with back home.

So no, I don't believe it will happen yet (if ever).
