The fun thing is...

We zeroed our FAMAS, to do a "test shot". Three of my shots landed at less than three centimeters of each other, the fourth one went wild at 20 centimeters because I fucked my respiration. The tight group of three landed three centimeters to the right and four centimeters up of the targeted point.

Then we adjusted our sights in consequence and from there on all my shots went kinda wild. Couldn't for the life of me replicate the tight group, and they all landed in that wide 15-centimeters circle.

I don't know what went wrong...

The good thing is, we were aiming at the torso, and I got 5 bullets out of 5 in the objective even there. Still, I'm disappointed. 25 meters, lying down, for fuck's sake !

And when we shot crouched, there's even one out of five of my shots that managed to not touch the target.

Goddamn.

When I would pull shots due to breathing, they'd go, like, five centimeters off-target. Your lungs are fucked up, son.

That's......stupid. Group-and-zero isn't a test of skill--it's just zeroing the damn rifle. You're only hurting the recruits by making them do shit like that.

No, for zeroing / adjusting we didn't get up, we were laying down for all the duration.

It was for the other shots that we had to change position between shots.

The idea wasn't to test our precision, but to make us practice the shooting positions.

We did something similar on qual-tables, but we did 20/10/10, changing position between each iteration. Did you guys shoot on a known-distance range, or an arrangement of variable-distance pop-up targets?

Known distance indoor range, 25 meters. 5 shots per position to practice, back to stand up position between each individual shot.

I mean when it came time to actually qualify. We shot on an outdoor range. 40 rounds, 40 targets. Pop-up targets on ranges from 50 to 300 meters.

Seems like we have different processes. As long as we're qualified as "Safe" to shoot (a weapon manipulation test, with inert cartridges), it's only a question of teaching us the basics of shooting itself.

We aren't infantry, and most of us will most likely never touch a gun again in our carriers once basics is over, outside of the yearly five rounds we will have to shoot to stay qualified.

That that's about how the Army does it, with all soldiers shooting bi-annual qual-tables and most not touching it otherwise. Infantry, though, tends to do it monthly, at least--and that's not counting stress-shoots, field-training exercises, ect.

If I remember right, left-and-right variation is trigger squeeze, up-and-down variation is breath control. If you have a sling, loosen it and wrap it around your left arm until you can hold the rifle tight to your shoulder by the foregrip without touching the trigger assembly with your other hand. If your shots are all over, none being consistent, more likely it's a positioning and sight picture issue, which you can work on just by aiming at a point on a wall in the barracks or anywhere they'll let you; my DS's had us do this in the barracks or on the drill floor to practice.

We qualify once a year with the M16A2. Since I've been with my unit, we haven't even touched on weapons we might actually fucking use on the trucks, such as the M240B, M2, or the Mk19. Thankfully, our new training NCO (an expert infantryman instructor) seems geared up to actually have us learn things rather than sit around all drill looking at SHARP powerpoints and police calling the trash people throw into the armory's truck pad.

Our drill sergeants are all combat-veteran infantrymen training new generations of infantrymen. Between their own experience and the laughter that goes through the battalion classroom every time they show a SHARP presentation, they really don't bother anymore

Here are my notes from our last two-hour SHARP presentation.

>Don't rape people.
>They don't like it.

What happens is at the start of the new fiscal year, they try to burn through as many of the fucking things as they can so nobody has to bother with it until the next fiscal year. Again, they usually just end with us taking an example whoever created the powerpoint chose to be disgusting/repulsive, turning into a joke, then running around with said joke and beating the dead horse with it until there's nothing but a bloody hole in the ground.

In my unit we decided that anytime you say something that is sexual or might be offensive, you have to say SHARPS afterwards.
That makes it not offensive.

Ex: I'm gonna crush your balls if you don't shut up. SHARPS.

Article 15's are starting to be more "Told ya I did it! I got proof!" rather than actual punishment.

Dammit, why do people slap so much tacticool mall-ninja shit on their weapons? That's like a girl caking herself in makeup when she's already pretty hot--it's pointless, expensive, and you just wind up with odd substances on your dick.

Even on the M4, you'll basically only ever use a bit of the top rail for your laser, and perhaps a bit of the bottom rail for a foregrip or light. The rest gets covered and forgotten about.

The most you should ever do to a Mosin would be to put on a scope and, perhaps, a recoil pad and/or clamp-on bipod to make a poor man's marksman rifle.
