Anydick, I got my RTD, finally, and I just have to take an APFT Monday to go back to training. And if I get anything less than 240 on it, I guess I'll just fucking kill myself.

what does "RTD" and "APFT" stands for?

On my side, started my specialist training. If all goes according to plan, I should have finished it in a year.

RTD means Return to Duty, meaning some guy with Captain's bars (whom I'm willing to assume is actually a captain and knows something about bones 'n shit) said I'm healed up enough to finish training.Harmony Ltd. wrote:what does "RTD" and "APFT" stands for?

APFT is the Army Physical Fitness Test, a test comprised of two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a two-mile run. Upon completion of the required number of repetitions/ required run time, the soldier is given a score of 0-100 points per event, with 180 being required to pass, 240 being a solid benchmark (and a requirement for many schools and groups like Airborne, Air Assault, and the Rangers) 270 being required for SF, and 300 being the maximum on the authorized non-extended scale.
Anyway, you're an aviation mechanic? What the hell are you being trained in that takes a fucking year? When my recruiters were doing everything short of sucking my dick to get me into an MOS as a Blackhawk mechanic, that AIT would have only taken 5 months.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
It's a pretty solid training, what can I say. It's the equivalent of a two-/three-years formation in the civilian sector. Then, you need to add to that the 6-month "sponsorship" at my first assignment, where I'll learn my actual job: while I'm currently acquiring all the tools of the trade, during that period I'll learn how to actually use them.
As for the content of the formation... Well, avionics, radars, and that kind of technical shit is kind of on the heavy side of things when it comes to learn it. That's why it's a six-years contract and why, barring a severe fuck-up on my part, I'm guaranteed at least another six-year contract after that: the Ministry of Defence wants to get some kind of payback from all the money spent on our training.

Yeah, my contract would have been for 6 years rather than 3 as an 11B, but it also included a guaranteed job placement as soon as my contract (or any new contract I signed) was done.
Although, as deployments are picking up a bit in Africa and continuing (if winding down) in Afghanistan, I should, if nothing else, be spared sitting on a base during my whole career as an 11B

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
To explain:
It's a generalist formation, and it's only when it's over than I'll be able, depending on my results, to choose my first assignment (which airbase I'll work in). But it's the base commander who'll decide, depending on what kind of aircrafts and / or job openings there's on the base, what will be my job. Which mean I have to be able to work on any aircrafts in the fleet. Which mean I have to be REALLY good at what I'll be doing.
While I suppose on your side, you were going to be trained from the ground up for that specific job, which would have allowed for cutting a number of extraneous crap from training, thus helping produce a much shorter training schedule.
Question: What level in the hierarchy would this mechanics job have landed you in? Private or NCO?

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Correct. I would have been trained exclusively for the Blackhawk, which works fine, considering it's our workhorse utility/transport chopper. Naturally, being that familiar with engines and aviation equipment (and myself having a bit of an aptitude for mechanics, anyway) there would be some spillover, but it's nothing like what you're describing.
Anyway, I would have finished AIT as a Private, though, my recruiters said, on a relatively quick path to becoming an NCO (specifically as the crew chief on a Blackhawk) or, if I chose to go that route, eventually a Warrant Officer piloting the thing. Being that they could see I wanted to be an infantryman, they were trying to sell the job by saying I could get into SERE school easily with this route, though I suspect the whole sales pitch was bullshit and I'd be stuck working on the Blackhawk on the ground for just about my whole contract

3D platformers... The only one I can remember really liking was sly cooper. And he magiced his way onto the platforms.
At least nintendo doesn't shoe horn platforming into spectacle fighters...

Well, Legends of Equestria looks pretty impressive. It's rather obviously unfinished, but that's a given. They've got a Linux version, too, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to discover that they even had a Macintosh version.

Hope they like dragging it all the way back from whatever impractical distance they chose to shoot. Or whine about the scope not working when they try to take a deer from seven hundred yards and miss.

Or paying a few thousand fucking bucks for a scope that, per Murphy's Law, will run out of fucking batteries just as they're squeezing the trigger.
Point is, they're steadily bringing all that sci-fi shit into real life. My main consolation is that they'll have self-driving trucks before they have robot grunts, so there'll be at least a few years where I can point at your unemployed ass and laugh.

The amount of shit that goes just getting a damn five-ton to work right, I'll still be employed for a long fucking time. Design is "What is the simplest way we can make this work? Let's not do that." The ladder in the back is held in by a wobbly little pin that, at least on my truck, sometimes likes to fall out on its own while driving; I keep duct tape with me to stick the pin in place before heading out. They'll probably give you mech suits or something before completely switching to robots, so you got that.

One of the Drill Sergeants here is actually an Airborne 88M, which makes me wonder if he jumps, lands, then drives the truck, or if they just put a big-ass 'chute on the truck and he just drives that bitch out the back of the plane. Although, from the sounds of it, the driveshaft would fall out or some shit if they did that.
Personally, I don't so much want a mech suit as I do some sort of robot parts. Like super-legs or an I-beam for a spine, so I could ruck with like a billion pounds forever, because, being Infantry, I'm above such things as "internal combustion engines."

I really just want to get my Air Assault wings, so, after the Army, I can secure a job as an exceptionally bloodthirsty stripper, sliding down ropes 'n poles 'n whatnot. With SERE, likewise, I could become a prostitute specializing in catering to sadists.
"Yeah, big sugar, starve me. Oooh, break that finger. Oh, you like that sleep deprivation don't you? Oh, yeah, waterboard me again."

Sounds like a good plan. Oh, I brought home another Mosin. Thing looks like it was used to club at least one thing to death. Discovered one of those infrared space-heater thingamagoos works bloody fucking wonders at getting cosmoline out of the stock. Just prop the gun up near the exit vent and wipe what seeps out, and repeat until the entire stock is clean.

One has to wonder if you could use an infrared heater as a means to absolutely fucking blind somebody who was moving in under NODs. I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever raided. Plus, I could also rig it to explode, which I suppose is a more practical counter-attack.
