It was a cute episode, I'll give it that. And we got an official bat pony for once since Luna's guards.
Now for spoilers I'll hide for now but probably won't bother with next post.
I rather like the ending message of how short term solutions can be short sighted and how one should listen to the expert on things. But that could just be the wildlife and environmental classes I took talking in this case.

I could have sworn I saw one of the magic bat forms fly into Rainbow Dash at the end, but it could have just flown over her.
And I fully expect Fluttershy's new cute little fangs to never come back up again.

I rather liked this episode, which is surprising considering its a Merriweather Williams episode.
The song was okay, not my thing, but I didn't like how they showed and dealt with the bats. During the song AJ and the rest talk about how the bats are while Fluttershy talks about what she thinks the bats are. They are a destructive invasive species after all and farmers really can't afford that kind of damage. A long term solution is great, but that takes time. Theres no point if you lose what you hoped to protect before the long term plan goes into effect. It just seems like the time detail was glossed over in the end for the sake of proving Fluttershy correct.
Other than that I thought the pacing was good, the characters were handled better than Merriweather's previous episodes, and the lessons were good if retreading "Fluttershy grows a spine". I really want that to stick or else we're going to have enough assertive Fluttershy episodes to fill season 3 by the time the show is over.

I dont know about anyone else, but I did not like this episode. Â The last six episodes have been freaking awesome, but this one just seemed weird.

- Â I did not like the song, the whole group ignoring fluttershy's opinion was odd, and twilights diagram was just unnecessary and bad. Â They pretty much only used recycled jokes like dash with cider and rarity with icky stuff (pinkie's hair was new and interesting though)
But flutterbat did look freaking cool, and I did like the vampire fruit bats.

Well, while I never outright disliked Merriwether Williams' episodes (aside from Spike at Your Service) they weren't the best, but this one pleasantly surprised me.

On the other hand, this being a Flutters episode it would be really nice if at least this once Shy's character development stuck and had some effect on the upcoming episodes, but considering her previous episodes that's probably too much to ask.

- Now here, the way I see it, the long-term solution Fluttershy was suggesting was "giving" part of the orchard to the bats so that they can feed in peace and even help spread the seeds for more apple trees to grow eventually. It gan go into effect immediately with the drawback being losing part of the orchard now and gradually  restore it somewhere else. Sounds better than to lose all of it or lose part of it everytime a new infestation comes around. Of course it's just a theoretical scenario, nothing works according to plan IRL.ÂÂ
Also two things I'd like to point out.
It's Fluttershy we're talking about here, she can communicate with animals and spent an incredible amount of time around/with them. Even if she hasn't encountered vampire fruit-bats before she knows more about animals than anypony else and it's unlikely that vampire fruit bats are super extra different from other animals she knows (regular fruit bats perhaps). So, "... what she thinks the bats are." is not entirely true, not to mention the others' perspective is biased as well.
Second thing is that even if the bats may have "one-track mind" and be "invasive species", they just do what's natural for them.
The Mane 5 also had a one-track mind about removing them from the invasive and artificial apple orchard, so I'd say they're even.
The problem here really is Equestria's ecosystem. It's artificialy sustained through magic (not canon, but seems more than likely) and apparently not adaptive. In nature (Everfree) these vampire bats would most likely have some natural predator to keep their population in check, making an infestation like this less likely. When Ponies artificially grow food in an artificial ecosystem to sustain their consumerist society, with no natural predators to keep the pests in check, this kind of thing is bound to have more devastating consequences.
All things considered, both sides are in the right, kinda.Â

I know I'm being hypocritical, as I too am a part of a consumerist society that artificially grows food (and I most likely don't know about this issue as much as I should). This is probably one of the reasons I couldn't be a farmer (among other things).Â

Where you do have a point is this episode being kinda meaningless, because Fluttershy's character development isn't going to stick anyway. But I wouldn't call it an outright filler, since MLP doesn't really have (yet) a focused, continuous storyline to fill in for, even though they try hard to push one in.

Seriously, what the actual fuck? Let's start with being as out of character as possible.
RD: "I only care about cider, even though I supposed to be loyal to my friend who will probably lose her farm because all her apples will be eaten if we don't help her.
Fluttershy: "The bats are precious creatures, even though they are a pure pestilence who will ruin my friend's business and life, because she's already said they have to sell cider to keep the farm over the winter, but the bats will make it impossible to make any."
Pinkie: I don't care, you suck anyways.
Rarity: Served as comic relief.
Spike: Never has a consistant character anyways.
Twilight: Knows the answer to everything as usual, so not out of character, just fucking annoying.
Fluttershy, die in a fire for putting pests that will put your friend out of business and home ahead of your friend.Â
RD, die in a fire for putting cider above actually caring about your friend, Miss not so loyal.
End of the episode, burn in the pits of hell for suddenly solving everything and even suggesting Fluttershy would stay part vampire.
Lesson: You were decent.
Song: You didn't have a consistent beat or timing and the words were forced in several places. 3/10
The only saving grace was that this episode didn't try forcing in the eighth deadly sin that is peaceful vampires.
Overall, 2/10. Wasted 30 minutes of my life.

I think RD was exaggerated for comic relief and to prevent same-y dialogue. If Dash was her usual self, what would she say? It would probably be the same thing everyone else said, BUT MORE FORCEFUL! It would have been like Castle-mania all over again. Everyone just saying the same things over and over again, but with less screaming.

Yeah I agree on Fluttershy. Her skewed priorities make her less sympathetic, yet she still wins despite her logic not being suited for the circumstances. A long term solution that helps both parties is all well and good, but you need time for them to work. The orchard would have been destroyed long before the details could be sorted out. Its hard to take the ending seriously when the opposition makes the most sense. Why make a preserve for an invasive species that doesn't belong there? Yet Fluttershy wins and a dangerous, famine inducing pest is kept close to the food supply for the town. What a victory.

Famine inducing? in winter wrap up they plant Carrots and Celery on what looks like a massive farm. Twilight eats daisy sandwiches (It seems like almost everyone has a garden.) and Spike in the same scene orders hay fries. Fried hay another food source for ponies.
There are plenty of food sources in and around ponyville that the bats wouldn't destroy. So famine inducing is strong. Aj might lose the farm but no one's starving to death well except maybe the apple family.

Personally I liked it for what it was. Â It is a kid's show after all and unfortunately the show isn't going to live up to bronies expectations anyhow. Â At the end of the day my little pony was made for little girls; hence every episode won't live up to bronies expectations for new episodes regardless.
