S4 Episode 9 - Pinkie Apple Pie

- I have to say that this episode had to have been the best interaction between Pinkie and AJ we've seen so far.
Pinkie was Pinkie in a way that wasn't obnoxious. The Apple family actually acted in a way you'd expect a real family to act like. The song was really catchy, and Goldie Delicious as a cookie cat lady was pretty funny.
The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they didn't get a definitive answer as to whether Pinkie was an apple or not. The idea that, as far as AJ's concerned, Pinkie is family whether related by blood or not could have had more meaning if it had turned out she really wasn't related through blood ties.
Oh, and if you look on Goldie Delicious's photo wall, I think that Derpy's in one of the photos wearing a hat.

I loved this episode quite a bit. For a new writer Natasha Levinger had a good grasp of the characters. Pinkie was in character and very funny, but not overbearing or groan-worthy. IMO she worked really well in this episode by being the loopy foil to a bunch of straight men. I really liked what they did with AJ. She was concerned about the family looking perfect the Pinkie and was willing to brush some conflicts under the rug, but she was more forceful, or more likely to make snips at the others, where she believed had the higher ground. I believe AJ firmly held the lead role with Pinkie in this episode rather than get overshadowed.
I thought the humor and facial expressions were top notch. There was a fair amount of black comedy in this episode and it wasn't heavy handed. The moral was well handled and I liked how they implied that Goldie was the link to Pinkie. It was relatively subtle and leaves things open.
The song was cute, but not the greatest thing ever.
Overall I'd rate this episode pretty highly. It was fun, relate-able, and the plot was realistic in my opinion.

Episode Link for those who need one.
All in all, I don't have that much to say about the episode, but my general opinion of season 4 is that the writers are much better with more casual episodes instead of "all-out adventure mode" ones, so they should probably focus more on those, with some adventurous season finales (like Canterlot Wedding) every now and then.
EDIT: Also, congrats to the new writer, she definitely made a good first impression. Keep up the good work.

Anyway, it was really nice Apple Pie episode, the interaction between them was well-done and believeable, the song was awesome and catchy (the best song of the season so far for me).
Too bad Apple Bloom didn't get to say she's Applelicious.
Jacky does have a point that AJ's standpoint that Pinkie's part of the family whether related by blood or not would carry more weight if she in fact wasn't related to them. But hey, if you go back far enough you'll find out we're all related to some degree, so...

Okay, running commentary as I watch it.
-I'm all for finding out about family history and discovering who's related to who, but I think they are grossly over exaggerating the welcoming of family members, especially one who's related by a tangent of a tangent branch.
I'm not bugged by Pinking Pie maybe being related to the Apples, just think they're a bit overzealous for it.
I liked the song. I cant' say much other than that.
Interesting the conflict so far as been "present the best family possible" when I think Applejack of all ponies should know it don't matter what happens, family is family. Pinkie understands that, since she's having a blast despite all the misfortune.
Good ol' Earth pony engiunity there with turning the wagon into a raft.
Geeze, eagles are eating good this episode.
Course there's a waterfall. Why wouldn't there be a waterfall on a river raft ride...
What's up with Pinkie's eyes this episode? They keep bulging out like crazy. Or is that just me?
Duckface Pinkie? Duckface in general... ugh.
Didn't see Golden not being home, but I guess it was needed so the Apples could pulled themselves together. And they stopped Big Mac in the middle of actually saying something other than "Eeyup."
I.. wha... They haven't met her yet? They haven't met Golden yet? Something has to be up, because I thought she was introduced season one, and I thought EVERY Apple showed up at the reunion...

I just find it odd that she lived so close, close enough to travel there within a day anyways, and yet they hadn't met her directly yet.
Like I said, I got nitpicky this episode but I still enjoyed it.

Yeah, did seem a bit odd. I suppose you could argue that the stream cut some time off the trip, both from added speed and the shortcut (which would explain why they packed so much, perhaps - planning on camping?), or that Goldie never invited them over and doesn't get out much herself. I figured that Goldie was that one Aunt that everyone knows and likes, but never want to visit. Also, it seemed like her and Granny Smith did know each other, it's just they haven't seen each other in a while.
Also, Considering they need a map to help find the place, it doesn't seem like she lived that close.

Well, that episode was fantastic. I'm still waiting for all the reason it was another 'the worst episode ever' but for me I think it's one of the best this season so far.
Eeenope. I checked, and right at the end where she's hanging the new photo up if you pause to take a look at the picture her head quickly covers up, (20:25?) the pony playing the harmonica has a light blue coat, not grey. And I think her eye color's a blue/purple shade.

The difference here was that 1) It wasn't at the end of the episode, 2) It was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it easter egg while others zoomed in on what they wanted you to focus on for a good 10-20 seconds, and 3) Megan didn't even know about the easter egg until it was pointed out by the fans.
