Really? That's actually how most (not all, but most) grouped-up media watching I've done for the last half-decade has gone. Mind you, that's usually with a pretty decent-sized monitor, but I remember watching all of Firefly with a few friends in college on a janky laptop-on-a-chair home theater setup.
To be honest I did it once. But it was because at the time we owned a computer but no dvd player. We didn't repeat the occasion, the computer was in a very small (closet sized) office.
@Robo I'd pick it any day over Doctor Who.

Can't say I'm a fan of Doctor Who, either. From the constant hyper-apocalyptic "The universe is ending and it all revolves around the Doctor and River Song boning or something" plots to the running themes of "Fuck internal consistency, everything works differently between episodes", it tends to wear thin.

@Doctor Who
Here's my problem with Who (beyond stuff other people've already said, which I can generally forgive): depth-bait. There is a ton of implied depth that never ever is or will be capitalized on. It's alluded to, sometimes, but in terms of both plot and character they're basically making a trompe-l'oeil painting, where initially things look like they've got a ton of depth but, on closer inspection, are pretty two dimensional. And even that would be okay if the show didn't run for so long. If season one of the new Who had ended the run, it would have been a strong, quirky bit of television. Ditto season two. But more and more they keep relying on this "hidden depth" that just doesn't hold up. There're a lot of reasons why this is happening, I expect (character continuity through multiple actors is a pain), but it's still a problem.
Incidentally, Rick and Morty could easily fall into this trap, too, but that show at least has dark comedy as a fallback. All this "No, really, Rick's actually got a heart of at least burnished brass underneath his gross, crass, violent, mean, white, white, uh... white guilt, garbage, piece of shit, self-absorbed, cynical exterior" stuff can't last forever. They're going to have to properly address it, or turn it into a joke. You can't string along your audience forever.

For me, the biggest killer is the complete lack of any cohesiveness, brought about partially by its long, long run
There are dozens and dozens of completely unrelated things trying to destroy Earth/the universe for no discernible reason. There's no overarching or unifying reason why all of these different and random monsters and species want to kill all humans specifically. More frustratingly, the human race, despite being perpetual victims, have no agency whatsoever--it's always up to the Doctor to save everyone while the humans run around and panic. Not to mention the hypocrisy of the characters--the Doctor has committed genocide on several occasions but refuses to even carry a weapon due to having some claim to the moral high ground.

I was literally just about to post a big nerdy thing to try and explain some of my views on the stuff you guys are brining up, but my browser crashed just as I clicked the post button and I really don't feel like writing it all again.
I will say that I think I know what episode you're talking about. I think the gist was that the aliens were holding a good portion of the earth population hostage and were threatening to kill them if the earth didn't surrender, but it turned out they were bluffing and the Doctor made them leave after winning the right to order them around after defeating their leader in a sword fight. And as they were leaving Torchwood shot them in the back with a giant laser. And I don't remember if the doctor said it or not, but I think there was some mention of that whole thing being a sign to the rest of the universe to come at Earth bro.

Anyone else happen to pick up MGSV? Just started playing it yesterday and I love it. There's obvious comparisons to be made to farcry 3's gameplay and progression. Definitely some plant gathering in this game for some of the stuff that requires the medical unit. But they cut out enough tedium like limited bag space, and when there is limited space and you need to do management like between your recruits ou can do it wherever you want even in the field.
For instance in the field I grabbed a guy who had an unknown skillm later the skil was revealed to be called "Troublemaker (harasser)" it's effect was (I think) "Will cause tension in the unit and give other soldiers PTSD". Given his stats were low I cut him loose then and there.

Unrelated, but American Ultra. Surprisingly good. Excellent visual direction and strong acting performances. Go see it, nerds.

@Frost
Good stuff. Bit more -core than my usual digs on the vocals, maybe, but I like their energy, the drums, and the guitars. Definitely what I look for in punk rock - nothing sappy, fun melodies, fast drumming.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
One of the problems I've more recently started having with Doctor Who, besides that recent seasons have been boring and Clara being a dreadful weight on the show who should have been gone the moment her plot line was done maybe a half season in, is that it forces you to choose between narrative tension and the ability to really be on the Doctor's side morally (and being behind him morally is really, really important to not basically being shat on by the show's writing). My favorite example is (last season's?) "Kill the Moon," where with the knowledge that humanity can't go extinct then ("Waters of Mars" was later, and is a fixed point in time) and the implicit assumption that a lesser catastrophe doesn't result from the moon hatching, the Doctor's stance of not doing anything that would harm the dragon seems pretty/relatively defensible. But if you allow the possibility that there are material stakes in the episode, then his insistence on the "sit back and hope things work out" plan is fucking monstrous. And you're a meanie poopyhead (and wrong, lol!) if you presume to think that or point that out, as the show will hammer in again and a-fucking-gain.

So I'm playing the Vanishing of Ethan Carter. First impressions are that graphically, along with the atmosphere and voice acting, it's pretty amazing. The environment design is great, too, but that may be bias because the Lovecraft-land forest resembles the wooded areas I grew up in

So, I've upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 yesterday. Had to fiddle a bit to get Fallout 3 working (again), with positive results. A few problems with micro-stutters in game, but I'm on the case...
Haven't tested with other games yet, but I've got to say I like what they did with the ergonomics so far. The idea of a unified OS for desktop and mobile is getting close to maturity I think.

@Harmony
I have not seen it. I've heard of it, and it's... sort of a cult classic? Only, in the old sense of the word, not the modern "Rocky Horror Picture Show/Firefly is a cult classic," where everyone and their respective dogs have seen it. It was based on a Stephen King short story in name only (he sued to have his name removed from the credits). Now, King has atrocious taste in cinema, so if he doesn't like it, that's a point in its favor, but looking at reviews it seems like not many other people liked it, either. Might be one of those films that was more influential than it was good.

I'm sorry, I'm sure this is great news for whoever wants to buy the game it's just this cracks me up. It's anime lesbian porn, I don't think it's that serious.
Also:
"According to wikipedia"
Not that wikipedia isn't good enough for this, just the first time I've seen it in an article.

Yes, but it's the first uncensored anime lesbian porn being specifically sold by a western distributor that doesn't focus on eroges. Hell, I don't even think there's a western distributor that does VNs in general.Last wrote:Scienza wrote:On an unrelated note, an uncensored yuri game is hitting Steam.

Then again, the pictures apparently aren't more graphic than Witcher 3, GTA etc. So I guess that's why Steam's allowing it.
