Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Had a bit of a derp moment, but completely forgot to ask: I've managed to figure out the premise of the new fic.
But have Somber managed to figure out how to fix the primary issue that PH had with the massive gender divide?

And writing a story that kills the only known hydra (I think) in the Wasteland is obviously part of his deep cover. Simply devious.SilentCarto wrote:Also, has anyone else noticed that Somber is currently ranked "Hydra"?

Blah... dunno why I haven't been able to relax ever since my dad died of a brain tumor. Feels like I just grow more and more easily agitated...
Ah well, it's kinda sad how this culture has become so backwards and PC, that it's considered rude to expose scams and lies on the ground that "people weren't harmed until they were shown the truth." so the logical conclusion? Shame people that are whistle blowers.
Heck, haven't even bothered calling out the recent scam folio. People don't care that it didn't even remotely deliver what was promised anyhow.
Anyhow, rambling on a bit here... regardless, I do hope you've learned from your mistakes Somber. Would be a bit deadpan if this new story carries the same flaws. Mostly as it removes 50 % of the reason you gave for not wanting to fix the mistakes in PH xP
It sounds like it's going good for it at least, so that seems promising =3 Kinda need to hear about something not going to shits.

Hey, dog, it's really simple. Just include no male characters whatsoever because the presence of males means women are being abused. Then make all your sex scenes include heavy descriptions of the females' vaginas, which all have to look like a hand grenade went off inside a roast beef and mayonnaise factory.

Don't mind that troll. He's always just tossing a fit whenever his horsedong obsession isn't met.
Anyhow, late night comment aside.
I do mean what I said. It would be really neat if you have gotten over the inconsistencies and contradiction PH suffered from.
As, like said. When both of the reasons given for not fixing them in the original release of PH was 1: "Just wanted to put it down and finally be finished with it. So you could focus on something new." (totally understandable, it's been years) It's the 2: "Much like conveyed in the story, I want them there to remind me that I can do better." I would quirk a bit of a brow at in case nothing now would have changed in the new story. Which as said: Hope isn't the case. As then you could just as well have had people correct them.
But so far I'm only gotten conversational snippets of what it's about and all that. So far it doesn't seem to go in the same tone or direction. So who knows, maybe those topics won't even pop up :P
Could be an alternative ofc. But ah well. Whether it's never been addressed so far, or if people just don't want to spoil, I won't know till I read. But for that, I gotta get around to finishing PH first heh.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
- Homelands Ch. 8 Commentary:
He expresses this with the usual zebra-ish utter certainty, but is it necessarily a bad thing? I mean, we don't see pony buildings falling down because the spirits were offended by it. The mathematics of structural engineering work. It's a different way of doing things, but ponies sure don't have to reroute roads because some spirit said "get off my lawn". For all that this allegedly angers spirits, they sure don't seem to object very strenuously.“Once, ponies were normal and in tune with nature. Then, you were not. You changed. You used your magic to assert yourself upon the natural world. To change it to suit your needs. You did not accept the seasons, you imposed them. You did not accept nature. You managed it. You stopped interacting with the spirits and they with you. Your alicorn princesses were the purest expression of this: forcing the sun and moon to move as you willed, rather than as the spirits of the sun and moon wished.”
I wonder... the Eater of Souls was all about inflicting its will on the cosmos. Could the shift in pony thinking be due to its influence? Or perhaps its presence made Equestrian spirits grow recalcitrant and forced ponies to adopt other ways?
Wait, I though that was the influence of the Eater of Souls. Is it just me, or could any given misfortune be ascribed to censure? This smells a lot like the old "We're having a drought because the gods are unhappy" way of thinking. I immediately wonder, "How could you know that? What would indicate that a given misfortune was not due to spiritual censure?"“To us, the Maiden of the Stars was inevitable censure by the spirits.”
Shine on, you crazy diamond. The ghostly butterflies flittered towards the lit talisman. It flared once, twice, and then the white glow was replaced by a kaleidoscope of colors as the gem lit up with the image of dozens of butterflies. [...] Scotch stared as the diamond rotated, and the magic glyphs within were transformed from stark blue markings to beautiful mosaics of light and magic.
You're welcome.“She didn’t seem all that upset about the Blood Legion,” Xarius croaked, his eyes narrowing.
“Yeah,” Skylord muttered. “And these guys don’t look like your usual security clowns. Worst assignment ever,” he growled, working the trigger bit on his battle saddle.
“And look, no driver,” Xarius grumbled as he surveyed the courtyard ahead.
Some days, I worry for the state of her toolbox. I sure hope she doesn't end up missing that particular size of wrench in the near future...Scotch fished through her saddlebags and pulled out a crescent wrench, ramming it into the bolt hole in the wall and jamming it in place.
Bwahahaha...One opened into an office with a terminal depicting tiny striped toasters flying lazily across the screen.
...oh please tell me this is actually him, as in he's an AI or a worm or something...“That’s me! I’m Doctor Z of Z TV, helping information that wants to be free to flee!”
Listen, 'Big Deal', you got another problem. Women always figure out the truth. Always. The cartoon smirked at them, raising an arrow-shaped sign that read ‘kinda a big deal’ and pointed down at himself.
A poison designed to target only zebras, perhaps? Or something more... insidious?Skylord gagged, grabbing his throat, red eyes bulging as he staggered back, then blinked. “Wait. I feel fine.”
Oh no, we're doing something that has Wasteland worried? Whatever shall we do?He lifted a card depicting Blackjack smiling at her. “You say you’re not like Blackjack?” he murmured as he turned the card. On the other side was Blackjack, mutilated, violated, and dying. “Don’t be like her. Go away.”
I get the feeling that this is a great window into Wasteland's drives. It doesn't necessarily want to kill everyone; it wants to perpetuate the status quo. For every tribe that rises, one must fall. For every device repaired, another breaks. It's not looking for stasis, but for unchanging change -- like the tides, eternally going up and down, but never rising or falling beyond its limits. I wonder if this is why it seemed to help Blackjack sometimes; she was stirring things up, breaking existing power structures and sowing chaos that could birth new powers... right up until she started changing things for the better and, perhaps, building something that could last.
GEE I WONDER WHO COULD BE BEHIND THIS“Yeah. This is way too smart for the Bloods. Blood Legion doesn’t do this. Their tactics are to overwhelm and terrify their opponent into giving up. If Adolpha hadn’t been here, they would have pulled it off without a hitch.”
Shit. Then Scotch’s side exploded in pain as a gunshot sounded. “She was right! They’re here! They’re here!” a stallion bellowed into a radio. “Ignore those alarms!”
...huh. That's not something just any old shaman can do, is it? I wonder whether this is an oblique function of being some kind of "shaman of repair", or if she's turning out to be something that's not quite a shaman in the traditional sense. She hasn't taken on any specific taboos yet, after all. (At least, not consciously...)Screams faded as the smoky shapes then stared at her. “You were poisoned,” she said weakly as she began to weep. “You need to go somewhere else.” No one should stay here in this stupid factory forever. “Please. Go somewhere better.”
I have to wonder whether a shaman's specialization is something they're born with or trained into, and whether it's a limitation against things outside their bailiwick or simply a specialization in a particular area. Boggy may be a bad example, since his presence seems to actively upset most spirits -- the shamans from Abalone seemed to imply that it's a limitation, but I wonder if that was just a matter of never having been trained to "speak earth spirit", so to speak. Or perhaps the tighter you bond with a particular class of spirits, the less the others listen to you...
Did you just pun on 'international terrorist'?“You!” the fat zebra snapped. “You’re working with that informational terrorist!”
Yeah, THAT one took about five seconds to look suspicious as hell.“Hah! I knew it! I knew it! Carnico made the Razorgrass! It wasn’t some pony weapon!”
Kid. You're in the communications room. I'm quite positive you can contact every receiver in the tri-state area from there.“Told you. I radioed someone in the Iron Legion that there’s something bad going on and they should check it out. They’re busy doing legion things.”
I knew it! He's not a hacker, he's a program!“No! Plug it in! Plug it in! I can’t get out!” he said, rushing to the sides of the terminal screen and bashing his hooves against it. “I can’t be trapped here! Information needs to be free!”
Well, okay, a distributed fleet of programs. I hesitate to call him an AI virus, but... yeah.He cocked his head as if listening, then nodded once. “Okay. We’ll play ball. What do you need?”
Hm. Implying (unsurprisingly) that he's a copy of somezebra who was once in IT.“Doesn’t anyone in management listen to I.T. anymore?”
“Did they ever, Gordo?” Doctor Z challenged, and both suddenly looked awkward at the momentary camaraderie.
Unless it was disguised as something else that she'd be expected to carry...“Probably in her office. She’d be pretty conspicuous carrying around a hoof-sized metal box wherever she went.”
Huh. So it's one particular dish, I guess. Whatever comes before pie.“What did they eat?” Another pause. “Love, don’t let them eat anything else. Trust me. They… just trust me. This is very important. I know it breaks tradition. Listen, please. Stay home tonight, and don’t let them eat anything else at the celebration. I love you too. Give my love to the foals. Alright.”
Won't think that for long once she starts crying and puking...“Whoa. Nice job,” Skylord said with a smile. “Kept it quiet, too.” He reached down and pulled the stallion off. “Got the third one right through the neck. I knew you were some kind of pony commando or something.”
Heh. Called it.She looked right at him and started bawling like a foal. It didn’t matter that he’d been trying to hurt her. For some reason, the tears just wouldn’t stop! “Or… something,” Skylord muttered, shaking his head.
Any chance we can blow the brige and drop it right on that ship? The sun was just below the eastern horizon, but she could see the shape cutting its way up river towards the bridge. A bad situation was about to become infinitely worse.
The Riptide had arrived.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
By the way, was it ever revealed why Blackjack inexplicably thinks like a Menenist more or less?
Or was that also chucked on the "meh, cba to explain/think of a reason" pile?
Especially considering it seems like Somber possibly decided to not fix most of the issues in PH nor learn any lessons before starting the new story.
Would be nice to know exactly how many loose hanging threads never gets resolved or addressed when I eventually go back to finish it.
(Though I am seriously considering just cutting my potential losses of a great follow up in fear that Somber just pulled a Colonial Marines. And simply cut out and post the fixed versions of the flawed majors scenes, and not risk messing up the regular dialog like I did in my first attempt.)

A crazy-person term that means "somebody who campaigns for rights of males, even though we already live in a Teh Patriarchy". Originated as a joke, but crazy people took it with complete seriousness and ran with it. Still running, I see.O. Hinds wrote:Menenist?
Um... had the work done by someone else while was himself working on something that interested him more? Not sure what this would even apply to. Well, I'm sure Katt can explain in a totally sensible way (lol).I'm afraid that I'm not sure what you mean by "pulled a Colonial Marines" either, sorry.
[The term would be referring to how the Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had his company work on the project that interetec him more - Borderlands 2 - and gave the one that didn't - Aliens: Colonial Marines - to some other studio, and the game was bad as a result]

@Valikdu:
Thank you for the clarification.
@Kattlarv re menenism:
While I am not certain, I believe that it was effectively the latter, yes. I think it was less that he couldn't be bothered and more that he didn't see a need, though.
@Kattlarv re Colonial Marines:
I'm afraid that I"m still not sure just what you're asking here. Somber wrote Project Horizons all the way to the end, if that's what you mean. He even put some edits in the FIMFiction version that he didn't run past the team first.
Actually, I suppose that the first item could have been addressed in them (I'm not sure exactly what he did), but I'm afraid that I don't think that it was likely done to your satisfaction if it was done at all.
Thank you for the clarification.

(Just replaced my hard drive cable. Again. Though I've also, sadly, got a new laptop ordered, with the expectation that it will become the new primary. I still plan to use this one frequently, though, as I expect to have more chargers and a better-fitting case for it. Still, sad. Ah well.)

So I remember wondering from time to time if you could read PH without FoE. Based on his comments, worked out fine for the guy who made this:
Cool that it did (and granted, I kinda suspected it would, even if you'd be missing some things). Still how does that happen, though, and why?
ETA: Now voted #6 on March 2017's pony music top 10!
