I'll skip the obvious Yu-Gi-Oh! joke and the WWF Joke.
Instead... Trixie is back and Trixie's victory is assured!

Well that episode was awesome.

I was hopping to see a training montage.
But I guess that would have just been getting overused at this point.

And I still don't like Trixie.
I hate her a bit less, but I still don't like her.

Well, that was pretty good. I was hoping for a little more elaboration about Saddle Arabia and those delegates, though.

Also, "alicorn" is canon.

I foresee many a fics involving OCs and BgPs finding the Alicorn Amulet and going on power trips.

Also, was it just me, or did the Alicorn Amulet have similar effects to the Ice King's Crown from Adventure time? You know, massive power and ever increasing crazy.

My morning has conspired against me to watch the episode but I finally saw it.
I love the fact that Twilight pulled a fast one and Big Mac got painted up as Applejack.

All in all a great episode, also special sneaking outfit Fluttershy.

I got to hand it to the tropers over at TvTropes. Not even four hours since the episode aired and it's already got a fairly complete page.

I dislike the use of 'alicorn' in canon. Never liked the word, but oh well, this episode is one of my favorites, I think. There was Zecora in it, most of the cast was utilized, (Twilight, did you ever think of, y'know, CONTACTING LUNA?) it was a great one.

I'm not sure I understand what Twilight's training with Zecora accomplished. There was that generic jedi training scene, her saying Twilight needs to unlearn what she has learned. She learned all she knows from Celestia, right? So I would think she wouldn't want to unlearn that.
Then they fake the whole thing and Twilight is left at the end doing the same trick she did at the start using roughly the same effort. Seems like that training didn't really help much.

Plus the idea that Zecora would know more about magic than Twilight strikes me as silly. Zecora does potions and stuff, not unicorn spells.

I adored the episode, though. Top five, at least.

I too wonder what kind of power Zecora commands, how it is focused, how it was obtained, and how it relates to unicorn magic. Apparently, it's quite compatible with unicorns. I think it should be noted that while Twilight was taught by Celestia, Zecora, I think, is at least a little bit older than Twilight, probably around 1.3 times her age by my guess, whatever that may be. Just a guess, and it doesn't quite justify her apparent knowledge. Perhaps she has knowledge which cannot be learned through books, or that which has not been documented in books.

What Zecora taught Twilight to unlearn, was when to NOT use magic.

That's what she said in her letter to princess Celestia in the end.

As for the kind of magic Zecora command, at a guess I'd say that she may be good with illusion/suggestion (remember the Nigthmare Night episode in S2 and her lightshow ?).

As for the trick she made with the tea goblet, I guess if zebras don't have horns, their innate magic can be expressed in other ways ?

Re: S03E05 Magic Duel

Post by Formis_Fluttergod on Sat Dec 01, 2012 5:55 pm

Well, in short, that was the best damn episode of this season so far and one of the best in general.

As for the details...
Episode 5 - The Magic Duel:

1) Soooo... One of the most powerful artifacts in Equestria just lies in a "regular" store? Fair enough I guess. (Also, either Trixie has a hole in her head or her teeth shine)

2) Psycho Flutters, and she also did her hooficure.

3) Twilight doing synchronized animal leviation... and she's already getting tired? Is it just me or is Twilight's magical power is kinda inconsistent throughtout the series?
I mean, she even pulled of an age spell during her entrance exam (sort of, or it could just have been a growing spell for all I know) and simultaneously turned her parents into plants and didn't even break a sweat. True, it was uncontrolled outburst of magic, but she still has all that power in her, only now under control. Perhaps she isn't capable of using her entire magical potential (without losing control) just yet, but still.

4) So, Pinkie is capable of breathing... through her ears, or not at all? Crazy

5) Twilight can summon parasprites? Cool! Twilight crazy

6) An age spell is only for the highest level unicorns? If she meant level of power then it makes no sense since Twilight is (according to Celestia) the most powerful unicorn she ever came across in terms of raw magical power (see my rant above), thus should be in the highest of levels. If they meant skill, then it also makes no sense since that'd imply the Alicorn Amulet grants not only power but skill as well.

7) Zecora knows a lot about Unicorn magic, or magic in general? And where did she get that knowledge since she relies mostly on potions? Still, it's nice to see her again and this time from some amazing new angles (not sure is we saw her face from up front before, but she looks badass) and with new expressions. Big mac

8) I'd hoped to see more of Twilight's training... Oh, well, can't have it all.

9) Trixie doesn't trust wheels, lol.

10) Poor Fluttershy doesn't get a say in anything and is completely ignored, again. She should use those assertiveness lessons more often. But I still love cute meek self, and right after sneaking out of the barrier she was soo adorable talking ot her animals and "being brave". Almost died of cuteness right then and there.

11) For a moment there, before Twilight revealed they merely deceived Trixie, I wasn't sure if I should be scared or happy that Twilight made Rule-63 canon.

12) So, Saddle Arabia has horses instead of Ponies or it's just those two?

13) And so, Trixie finally gets her redemption, I never really liked nor disliked her, now I even like her (even for being such a good villain in this episode).

14) Twilight joins Pinkie in breaking the 4th wall? What the hgjkwHGlkwhgALJHalh... Derpy Hooves

EDIT:
Moar of the 5th episode:

1) Another mention of Pinkie's parents was also nice.

2) Good to know they have spells for water-walking (or at least standing). :D

I think that since AJ merely switched places with Granny Smith it's quite possible for her (Granny) to have her normal eyes if they used some sort of contact lenses (they're not really comfy or healthy, and in her age...). If they used magic to change the eye-color it could be a simple animator mishap, but since she has orange eyes in all three scenes she appeared in I think it wasn't accidental. So it probably was something they couldn't have used on her due to her age or whatever.

Formis, what he mean is that Applejack has green eyes, and that Granny Smith has orange eyes.

This mean that seeing old!Applejack, resembling Granny Smith in her oldness, with orange eyes, should have been a clue to the viewer that it was indeed Granny Smith disguising as old!Applejack.

Thus, consistency.

An Arabian is a type of horse. Thus, Saddle Arabia has horses.

If we ever saw ponies from a place called Belgium they'd probably be belgian horses in following this trend.

I highly doubt that that was just some "regular" store. From the look of some of the objects in there, it looked like one of those shady, dark alley, Oriental artifacts Shop that specialize in "Less than Legal" Mystic Objects.

Also, do we have a picture of the shop's owner? I'm pretty sure he's a reference to something.

Fair enough, "regular" black market artifact-shop. Still, if it's such a well known atifact, why isn't it locked away somewhere in the Canterlot castle or something?

And I can't think of anyone in particular the shopkeeper could be reference to.

He was probably hoping someone would make a bargain like Trixie did. The whole, "this is too dangerous" bit was probably to con a buyer into having a opening price way worth than it was actually worth that way even with haggling he would still get a ton of money. I'm surprised Trixie didn't try and haggle for a cheaper price.

Also with how much money it did cost Trixie I'm surprised she didn't ask for it back to sell back to the dealer.

...I don't think the bits were real. Trixie had been out of work since the incident and she'd never really seemed all that wealthy to begin with.
