When anyone mentions WW1-ish tanks the first thing that comes to mind is the Mark 1 followed directly by Warhammer. Admittedly I mixed some 40K elements into my story because they are interesting. Equipment plays an important role as a plot device so I pay extra attention to it.

It's just not a terribly good connection; I've had this and similar problems before. When they installed the system, they apparently greatly underestimated the amount of bandwith a building full of college students would need (how they managed to do that, I don't know).Cptadder wrote:What is the issue with your residence hall murdering your connect, is it just designed for web surfing only or some such?

Colleges are infamous for this however as most of those networks were installed in the 1990s and to save money many are still 10mpbs thicknet which was cheap back then. Also University connections themselves are pretty slow. Few places have shelled out for Fiber yet or even just Gig Ethernet because most Universities managed to through ill luck be just perfectly positioned to miss deals on the good stuff.Ironmonger wrote:I'm not surprised. IE say your buying a Phone, the Iphone 4 has been out for a year now, but the Iphone five was just released so the Iphone 3 is a steal these days... but if you were upgrading during the Janurary time frame a new Iphone 4 can be had for current Iphone 3 prices. In Universities case those that don't practice draconian internet policies to try and stop piracy often are a year early to the correct time to upgrade missing out on the massive cheapness of 10/100 when 1000 hit and so on.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Actually, the university's connection is in theory pretty fast; as I recall, we've actually got a dedicated fiber line. Then the line gets onto campus and meets a mishmash of century-plus construction and retrofits built often with an eye more to cost than capacity, resulting in highly varying connection quality that at its best is still iffy for muliplayer gaming. The older residence halls didn't have wifi at all until, IIRC, last semester.Cptadder wrote:Colleges are infamous for this however as most of those networks were installed in the 1990s and to save money many are still 10mpbs thicknet which was cheap back then. My college solved the piracy bandwidth problem by creating a DC++/hotline (remember that?) server on the network and encouraged people to steal stuff from each other. Interesting solution, but it kept traffic down.
Of course this was late 90s so file sizes people were stealing were a lot smaller, too.

Well, I'm back, for those of you who remember me or even knew who I was in the first place. I just finished skimming through all the comments I missed (god, you guys fill up threads fast. This one is half full and it's only been five days since it opened). By the way, when I say "skim" I mean I basically just read comments by Somber, O. Hinds, and Snipehamster. If I had tried to read them all it would have taken weeks, and I likely would have gone insane in the process. That said, I would occasionally stumble upon some interesting conversation and read it through, like the The Dark Knight Rises reviews and the Sims stuff. Those were funny.
Anyways, I suppose an explanation for my absence is in order. It may not really be necessary, but I wish to give one all the same. It all started with me saying that I would try to finish the P-21 comic I was working on in time for Somber's birthday. Needless to say, I failed. At that point, I decided not to post here until I finished. So naturally, I ended up developing an art block regarding the comic, and kept putting it off. It was around that time my summer job started. My job was to be range director for the bb gun and archery ranges at a local scout camp. It was a fun job, but it also involved me living at the camp four days out of every week, including weekends. Also, the first month-and-a-half had additional days for training and additional groups coming in to camp in between the usual cub scout groups, resulting in me only having one day off on some weeks, and none on others. I also went on a week long sailing trip in the Bahamas, which was awesome. So yeah, lack of time combined with me putting it off resulted in the entire summer going by without me finishing the comic. Even when things relaxed and I had more free time, I ended up drawing stuff other than the comic. Part of what kept me away was a feeling that I needed to have something to show for my absence, which was a silly notion. Anyways, I'm back now. Finally. I really missed this.
You're back! I actually thought you were gone because we'd scared you off.

I was thinking a broader timeline, going from the show to the FOE epilogue at least. A timeline that included the better FOE side stories, maybe color coded to show which story they come from, would be cool. And some speculative dates for historical stuff like the founding of Equestria, Discord's reign, etc. would also be cool.SilentCarto wrote:Not a general-purpose one. Are you interested in my countdown-to-Maripony schedule, or are you looking for something broader in scope?nebulous wrote:Has anyone made a timeline of the events in Fallout: Equestria and/or Project Horizons?
Essentially, I'd love for an Equestria / Fallout: Equestria / Project Horizons / some other FOE side stories timeline to exist. Maybe it could start as a cleaned-up FOE wiki timeline, but their adherence to only showing different fanfics' canon would prevent a lot of concrete dating. So, what client would be good for starting a FOE-verse timeline on?

Pretty much. Also, their idea of addressing the problem was sending us an email asking us to please not use the wifi so much, thanks. Things might be a bit better on the wired network, but a: though I could buy one, I don't at the moment have a cable and b: my RA said that we were pushing the building's bandwidth limit anyway.Sindri wrote:Is the answer all of it? Video games take less bandwidth on average than normal web surfing surprising enough. Yes you get a spike of activity when you first load but the amount of raw data you need to send is surprisingly small. Latency (speed of delivery) is much more important than raw bandwidth. There is a hard limit of course. But even something as little as a 256k connection if the Latency is low enough can play any game out there without any serious lag.O. Hinds wrote:Pretty much. Well, I'm not a CS major, but something about the campus network in general certainly seems to dislike multiplayer Minecraft (this is not the first problem I've had with it). And the network in my residence hall certainly is slow at a great many things.Cptadder wrote:Video games take less bandwidth on average than normal web surfing surprising enough. Just dress well and avoid the temptation to walk around in slippers and you'll be fine.
Alternatively depending on location, you might be able to simply drop 10$ on a 9dBI antenna assuming you have one of those wireless network adapters that let you upgrade the antenna. Most of them are pretty cheap if it's more than 30$ it's because your looking at an outdoor antenna which you don't need.
Unless you REALLY need to tie into that wifi network that's two miles away.

@Necro's back
Good to see someone come out from the depths of the past, it feels like we haven't had you around for a good while. Sounds like you had a busy time while you were away. Nice drawing of Deus, BTW.
@Murky
Really need to read that... I feel guilty for not doing so... but those 30k word chapters beat the hell out of my eyes, and if I do as-read reviews for them I'd take about 9 hours to read one chapter.

He's literally talking about stealing someone else's wifi using an antenna -- and saying you shouldn't need a outdoors one unless you plan to steal it from someone the other end of town.

Actually, reading more, it looks like that antenna is meant to go on the router? Sorry, but I think that the college might object (and I'd need something to stand on, I think... and probably more than one antenna. The routers are mounted on the hallway ceiling.)

"network adapter" being the important phrase here, seeing as he's assuming you're running off an non-integrated system (aka, dedicated network card) which can be upgraded.
Usually they'll have these two golden prod things that look almost like nuts, which an antenna cable will be tightened onto (by hand) to include an external antenna piece.
In the event of having a laptop rather than a PC, some wireless network adapter cards (read as: the higher grade ones) can have their antenna upgraded to increase signal send/receive range.
Trust me on this one, he means your end of it all. Generally routers don't get such dedicated upgrades. (and such would be pointless anyway, seeing as it's a bandwith issue and not a range of service issue.)
