The root of the problem is people killing each other.
RandomBlank's post about how the availability of guns cannot be correlated to the amount of violence in a country demonstrated that perfectly.
That may be the case, but for more limited issues there are some suggestive trends. See, for instance, incidence of police killings as related to concealed carry/"shall issue" laws. Or that in only two of the last ten years, shootings were not the largest cause of law enforcement fatalities in the US. Looking at total gun deaths, we see that assault weapons bans and (less relevantly) safety/storage requirements have large negative correlations with gun-related fatalities. Granted, the data also suggests that the best way to reduce gun deaths is by improving educational attainment.

@Guns
Yeah, I'm not touching this one at the moment. =P

@Nightfire
Pretty lazy day for me, actually. Last night I had some fun bouts of minor paranoia, though! Well, fun in retrospect. =P On a related note, my house makes weird noises and I'm bad at remembering if I shut the garage door.

@Kim
Okay, honestly, makeup kinda weirds me out. When friends put it on, I sometimes have difficulty recognizing them in a crowd. =P There are probably some implications here, but it's already tangential. Anyway, point is, I like you as you are, and I'm going to selfishly say that I can't damn well see why other folks can't conform to my flippin' view. Your forthrightness about your ideals is fantastic (I may be biased, since frankly I agree with most if not all of 'em) aaaand, well, a woman who is open about her sexuality is a little intimidating but also pretty attractive, frankly. That's the impression I've received, at least.

How I view makeup (even though I'm not big on it, though I love doing subtle hawt raccoon eyes eyeshadow when I go to shows or out clubbing and I'd rather live in a bubble than be forbidden from doing fun things with my hair) is that it shouldn't be noticeable. It's to enhance, not overwhelm or replace your natural beauty. So many women don't understand this and look like awful gross clowns.

@ Guns:

I'm going to start by saying I strongly support being able to own a gun, and that I believe everyone should.
This isn't because I think it's cool or anything like that, I couldn't care less about that. It's because they are protection. And don't start saying "Well if nobody could buy them then there would be no need to protect yourself from them", because that's horseshit.
No matter how hard you try, no matter how many bans or regulations you put against them, criminals still can and will get guns. They always have done it, they always will do it, so stopping good people from getting them will just fuck them all over in the event that a gun-toting criminal decides to target them.

(I apologize if this sounds angry, it's not, I'm just passionate about this topic because I've had to make the argument way too many times in my life and am strong in my belief. Also, sorry if this convo is over and I revived it for no reason, or if this argument has already been made and I'm just restating old info. You guys post too much for me to try weeding through the entire thread to find every part of this particular conversation Spike )

Most of it certainly shouldn't be noticeable, but personally I think certain forms of makeup, like lipstick or eyeshadow, can be really enchanting if intelligently applied... even when using unnatural hues.

@ Guns:

Weapons are very helpful:

open jar of pickles

stir salad or other foods

feed a baby

protect ya self against me

good for vaginal insertion

play the "smile" song with it

free money at banks

good for toilet paper

etc.

Does the UK largely outlaw guns? Yes.
Does the UK have less gun crime? Naturally.
Does the UK have less violent crime? Nope.
Does the UK even have less fatal crime? Not significantly.

Guns got nothing to do with it.

Guns got nothing to do with it.
That said, knives are easier for an unarmed, untrained person to counter than a gun is. I feel reasonably confident in my ability to disarm and/or escape from a person armed with a knife; the same is not true of a person armed with a gun. Furthermore, in a high-stress situation (such as a mugging), the chances of a knife being discharged accidentally are significantly lower, I expect, thus making the best defense against not being killed during a robbery (cooperating) that much more effective.

@Katarn
That, good sir, is completely adorable.

Steam sales are very awesome. I gifted Valikdu a copy of NV:UE, then bought another for myself when the price came down to 10. Project Nevada is a fun mod.

@Guns

I probably shouldn't contribute, considering I'm Canadian, but...

Speaking of Canadian-ism, the documentary Bowling for Columbine is great for this subject. Nails all the pros and cons of guns use.

Honestly, I think a person's opinion on the matter falls under their upbringing. It seems barbaric to let everyone have guns to me because that's sort of the general consensus here, while in the states, since most people own a gun, it seems normal.

From what I recall that documentary plays haphazardly with information played as fact and uses selective editing bias to prove some of its point so it really isn't something that could be taken at face value.
