Re: Fallout Equestria: Murky Number Seven

I've nearly read a half of the latest chapter and I find it amazing I ever thought Wildcard was "insane".

Spoiler:

Below us, the battle for Aurora's Lab was falling heavily in favour of the slavers.  I could see some of Wildcard's raiders stamping on orbs and smashing them.  Crazed enough to not care for the voices they likely already heard anyway.  With phantoms popping out of existence, the distraction was beginning to falter.  Wildcard almost looked disappointed, almost hurt at them disappearing before a fury came across his face.  I saw his expression snap, changing to a childlike glee as he looked at the battle in front of him, not fit to rejoin.

I...just didn't get him.  Not at all.  He scared me as much as he confused me.

When everyone else was running wild, Wildcard used his reason to figure out what was causing the images and started dispatching them. I think Murky misread Wildcard's face and that he didn't look disappointed or hurt, but annoyed and unsatisfied. After he finished he put back on his "I'm crazy!" mask and moved forward.
'Cause seriously, Murky, there's nothing to get. He's a clown trying to maintain the appearance of being crazy and irrational. He's passed up far too many opportunities to betray real insanity (or even a lack of judgment and reason) for him to actually have it. He's just a soldier for Chainlink, now, so treat him like any other massive, dangerous pony, and stop letting his act cause you undue fear.
Heck, Barb was more screw-loose than this guy, with his showmanship, his dramatics and particularly his decision to take over the mall without any kind of escape plan. He did not have any level of foresight whatsoever and did what he wanted for fun. Wildcard, strictly by merit of obeying Chainlink so diligently (like when Chainlink just had the guy stick around a kitchen or something while he held his slavemaster conference), is nowhere near as unhinged, if he even can be said to be at all.
It's kinda funny... they're opposites. Not just physically, but in demeanor. Barb always wanted to seem like he was smart, in control, the brains of the operation. He wasn't, though. He literally couldn't plan to save his own life. Chainlink probably planted a few ideas in his head about how fun and easy it would be to take over the mall and how almost all the slavers would just so happen to not be at the mall on x day at y time. Barb then immediately did that, thinking he was all cool and showing everyone what an awesome warlord he was... then he died. Horribly.
Wildcard pretends he's "out of control", but follows his orders. He knows the only way he's getting out of this is by working with the slavers and has latched on to the biggest one out there. He's done his best to impress Chainlink... so much so that, when Chainlink introduced Murky to the guy, he was INCREADIBLY complimentary. Chainlink LOVES Wildcard, the guy might even be Chainlink's favorite "slave" (Chainlink doesn't respect slaves, so I don't think he truly sees Wildcard as one deep down... more of a free mercenary or loyal soldier). Wildcard's pretend attitude of being unpredictable and indomitable probably help with this, too, since Chainlink can pretend he was the one to "bring Wildcard into the fold". That he's such a great master even the "masterless" obey him. Meanwhile, Wildcard gets all the perks of being an ascended slave, much like Sooty does. Plus, he gets to finally take out Brim, if not for revenge, then to decisively cement his position as leader of their remaining raiders. He still needs their support, after all... he can't do EVERYTHING on his own. The situation, as a whole, is relatively win-win.

Glimmerlight pulled the trigger, blowing the back of Sooty's skull clean off.  The merchant's body fell off me, lifelessly dropping to the ground amongst a spreading pool of blood.
Hah, wow, Chainlink took a loss, even if it was of a third stringer glorified extra that he didn't even particularly like. I'm sure he'll just put another pony (maybe a slaver, this time) in Sooty's position to guarantee he continues to get a cut (probably an even bigger one, since Sooty seems the type to hold out) of these blackmarket profits.
I gotta wonder why Sooty decided to isolate himself from the rest of the slaver force, though. Rather random. He's not a combatant... why would he think he could take them on by himself?

“Don't any of you dare shoot him!  Hold your wretched fire!  Under the altar of times past we shall fight, Warlord!  Come over here!  Be the alpha male you thought you were!  FACE ME!”
...heck, this Brutus is crazier than Wildcard, too. He's actually just in this for the status of being the one to kill Brim. He's running forward to try and do this one on one and demanding everyone stop fighting. I know he's scary, mostly mechanical and drugged up, but he's still running in front of a ton of guns and just expecting people to just stop shooting. For their adversaries to, as well. I'm certain Wildcard first raised an eyebrow at this, then snarled at the idea of this guy countermanding his authority, consider killing the guy so that they can get their job done, then groaned and put back on his "I'm so crazy! Wee!" mask when he realized that "Wildcard" would think this was funny and allow it since, heck, maybe this way Brim and the others can finally take Brutus out and further cement Wildcard's position.
...well, maybe there'd be some way to make the injuries he sustains a little more fatal than usual without raising suspicion from Shackles and the old guy he likes.
Basically, Wildcard's too smart to agree to a 1 on 1 with Brim, Brutus or alone any force that could seriously challenge him.
At least, now that he's not in the Bloodletters. I get the feeling Brim took it easy on challengers to his leadership back then given Wildcard is still alive and not crippled horribly. I expect Brim wanted to keep Wildcard's strength around back then.

I mean, how much sense would it really make to keep someone around who constantly challenged your right to lead? I have my doubts the challenges back then were to-the-death... or even to-the-serious-injury.

Anyone's thoughts? Twilight Sparkle

Got off my lazy ass(again) and read the latest chapter. No no, there hasn't been a new one in the past few days, but the one swicked was talking about up above.

Hate to think I'm burned out on ponies, but I haven't watched the past three episodes of the show and I put off reading this chapter and the latest one for PH for a long while. I still enjoy them, but I don't feel compelled to read/watch them NOW and more content to wait.

That said, the break between chapters( longer since I did put off reading it) made me have to rethink everything about the characters a bit.
I remember Murky was getting stronger, but I had forgotten how strong he's become.
I remember Protege being broken and enjoying it, but I didn't realized how broken he was. Nor just how much of a slave he still is. Oh yeah, it's always been there, but it seemed to have been cranked up for this chapter. Must have been the desperation.

Ragini's death was... not predictable but didn't come as a complete shock. She got to see Murky "fly", told Protege off by telling him she didn't give a damn about the contract, and got one last chance to be a badass before Wildcard stopped having fun. All in order to break Protege and set up that ending.

There still seems to be something going on about or between Unity and Protege. Am I reading into something not there or missing something?
Speaking of Unity, I can't really say much I haven't already. I like her, but I still ship Sunny Number Seven. Her ability to tell magic signatures apart is cool I will admit that.
While I always enjoyed the long chapters, I feel it did a disservice here since it pretty much highlights in bold letters "Brimstone is going to lose!" The rematch better be worth it.

So many questions answered, so much to break Protege, so much snow, warm feelings and darkness. Though with the homestretch well within sight, the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a tiny one in the distance but pretty much only a few yards away with some thick heavy curtains hung to hide it.

Despite all this, still looking forward to the next chapter. And the one after that. Don't even know if Fuzzy comes by here anymore, but I don't see that as a reason to stop posting.

Oh, and since nobody has posted it, this went up April 30.

I said that on Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:51 pm on this very forum.

Been reading Murky Number Seven little over 2 years now. Always though how cool it was that chapter 6 just happened to come out on the same day as my birthday. "Lighting the Darkness".

Two years later, on the day after my birthday we have Chapter 24: Defying Gravity.

The story is still far from over, but the light at the end of the tunnel is brighter and clearer than the Sun, and while things may cause it to go dim, those are nothing compared to the darkness we've been through to get to this point.

Other than "I really enjoyed this chapter" all I'm going to say is that you played me Fuzzy. Played me just like you played Murky. You clever bastard did you play me. But what fun is reading a story you can figure out well ahead of times?

Comments on the new chapter:
"Look, I...I know it doesn't make any sense! Something in me just didn't want to forget about him!"
…Oh, really?
I wonder what that might be. :D

"Not for them and not for your little colt. He's been returned to where he should be."
Ah, it looks like the villains at least aren't stupid enough to risk being found kidnapping one of Red Eye's foals. Hm, though… I don't recall just what Chirpy Sum's seen, but he might know enough to cause them trouble.

"I screamed, the most deliberately pathetic and whiny scream possible."
Ah, yes. Mr. Peace. I'd been forgetting about him. :D

I imagine that the thoughts of the non-Murky member of the party currently feature large numbers of "what"s, "the"s, and "fuck"s.

Yes, take the foals from their climate-controlled comfortable living quarters with clean food and water, friends, a small army of fanatical guards protecting them, and opportunities to learn and practice useful skills. I'm sure that they'll be much better off out in the Wasteland. Assuming that they don't absorb stray bullets during the escape, of course.

"I don't quite know why I got up and followed Protégé."
This, perhaps? :D
(Okay, probably not…)

"I heard the scouts said they're definitely coming this way, mate. Rumour is that old Red's got it bad over in Everfree too. We lost contact a while ago."
Oh, wow. So we're that far along in the timeline?

"Behind us, Mister Peace let Protégé through...before promptly tearing the entire grate off in one fell swoop for his own bulk to fit past. Why hadn't he just...oh forget it."
Hm. Showing off for Glimmerlight, Mr. Peace? :)

"last part of our plan. Right now, we had"
There are a lot of spaces between those two sentences for some reason.

How does Murky know about supermarkets at all, much less ones where payment is required?

Well. There's a surprise. :D

"Yet as I looked in his eyes I only saw fear...before he shook his head and slowly pushed my hooves away."
Aww. And that's probably the ship killed… Still, I've supported crackier. :)

I am a leaf on the wind; watch how I soar…

And there we go. A good chapter, I think.

Nothing from Frozen in there, I'm afraid! I'm actually not one of the bigger fans of it, purely down to over-exposure and not enjoying Idina's voice too much. (Kerry Ellis ftw. :3) Defying Gravity certainly is though. The story was made on its own originally, but after seeing the show in London I realised how close in tone the two scenes were. As such it only felt right to pay homage with the chapter title and a few lines. Elsewise people might have thought I was just copying!

Remind me again why this story isn't getting as much attention as Project Horizons?  Seriously after reading chapter 24 I think it can safely be said that MN7 deserves just as much praise!

MN7 Chapter 24 Spoilers!:
Okay so I must admit, I really did not see Mister Peace coming, despite how obvious it now seems in hindsight.  Still I don't think anyone could have asked for a better scene to capitalize his grand re-entry!  A pity Grindstone made it out alive but-eh, sounds like he isn't going to be around for too much longer anyway.

After the non-stop action of the previous chapters its good to see Murky and crew getting back to their roots by sneaking through the shadows and robbing slavers blind.  On a personal note, I literally laughed out loud during the scene when Murky got "his" goggles back.

On a more ominous note, judging by those comments made by the slavers it would seem the events FoE chapter 43 have just now occurred or are occurring, so its only a matter of days or even hours before the Enclave come knocking.  Not too surprised by this since when have the events of the larger world not conspired to make life difficult for Murky?

Those revelations regarding Murky and Unity were just... wow!  Like any good twist it all seems obvious now, what with all the gaps in Murky's narration with regards to how he got to where he was in the beginning, his uncanny knowledge of the Ministry HQ layout, and the borderline "love at first sight" moment during Murky and Unity's "first" meeting.  So definite points for managing to catch me by surprise with that one!

And finally on to the scene that absolutely everyone is thinking about.  If the previous flight (okay, gliding) scene was the most impressive, exhilarating and heartbreaking scene of the story so far, then this flight/gliding scene was the most impressive, exhilarating and triumphant scene so far!  The build up, the tension, the execution, the giddy laughter afterwords, that scene was seriously perfect in just about every way (made even better IMO by this piece that I just happened to have playing in the background at the time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ0onmg56lg)!  It really was the culmination of all of Murky's (and Unity's) trials and achievements up to this point.

So I don't really have much else to say, other then 'awesome chapter!' and my attempts at making empty internet threats at Fuzz to WORK FASTER!!

599 pages in

Poor Murk DX

and now I'm on Chapter 20

I'm rather surprised Shackles hasn't done the one thing that would truly break Murk, unless he pulls it off in the next four chapters to get him away from Protege...

hm, shame, I wanted to see Murk working for Sooty >///>

Don't look at me with those disgusted expressions

God...so I started reading Murky Number Seven while I waited for other stories to update (silly me, I thought it was finished, but now I'm following 3 stories...), and I really like most of it. I'm only at chapter 15 though...and I'm getting pretty ticked at a lot of the stuff that keeps happening. Like when Murky specifically says, "Hey, I shouldn't do this because its gonna get me caught!" Then does it anyway and gets caught...or when he just stands there and does nothing for no reason (no one told him to stop or stand still, he can't claim indoctrination) AND gets caught again. Its just really weird stuff and stupid mistakes that I feel don't make any sense. I suppose a good part of my frustration is my own love of sort of sneaking around and such, but still. Murk's not an idiot, I don't understand how he can keep making the same mistakes over and over and over again...

But its not! He's done them right before, seen how good they go, and says "Hey, this worked! I should do it like this more!" Then he goes and doesn't do it. He learns! Then he completely ignores what he's learned...

Because he's against ponies that are smarter than he is

What, you expect them to not know every inch of the city they rule?

Obviously they don't, since he's able to hide in drainage workshops, rubbish piles, and old ruins, but all that had nothing to do at all with what I'm talking about. When he's sneaking around, like when he was a fugitive, he keeps making mistakes that he's learned from before. Especially when it comes doing sneaking from point A to point B, he goes from skilled and mildly experienced to suddenly having seemingly no experience, making mistakes that he's already made and learned from. Honestly this is just me defending some griping that was brought on by my annoyance at Murky's behavior at this point...

Eh, it's not everyone's cup of tea

It's much slower paced than Littlepip or Blackjack's stories, but to me, it has its own charm

Well… Sorry about this, but I I've finally decided to stop following the story. Going into this chapter, it was already a case of possibly finding something to renew my interest rather than a risk of finding something to remove it. I read the beginning, wasn't very engaged, skimmed to nearly the middle, then lost my suspension of disbelief and didn't have enough binding me to the story to keep going. Once again, I apologize, but I think that continuing from here would probably just be a sunk cost fallacy for me. I wish you luck for the rest of the story and those who are still enjoying it, though, and I did have a good time with many of the earlier chapters.
I suppose that this is likely similar to how some people feel about PH…

...Hinds, if you have a respectful critique, voice it. Don't just say you have reasons you can't enjoy the story and stop. That doesn't help anybody, least of which the author.
