I will probably subdivide each chapter to meet those ends. However, I still can not feel like I can empathize with any of the cast anymore.

Hmmm.
Those of you that do empathize with a character or characters, who?
I don't think I do, personally; I just find them entertaining.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion

Post by Downloaded Skill on Tue Aug 05, 2014 1:31 pm

I find myself empathizing with BJ, P-21, Goldenblood and Glory. However I do empathize with P-21 the most out of all of them. The rest of the characters I usually just understand them and why they did the things they did. BJ I empathize with because I share her goal of wanting to improving things for everyone, being too stubborn to give up when other people say that it's impossible, a strong sense of justice that even extends to yourself, and a willingness to give people second chances. Other than that I do like her sense of humor and how she talks. It reminds me of myself (I talk differently in real life, I just prefer the respectful tone on the internet). It's not related to empathy, but I also like BJ because of her culture which sounds odd but let me explain. I like how BJ came from a different culture and it influences her entire outlook and whats right and whats wrong. I like it when a viewpoint character thinks differently than me for good, understandable reasons and not just "we're good because we're good" or "we're evil because we're evil". I like the culture clash and the development that results from it, but the cultural influences don't completely go away.

P-21 I greatly empathize with because he's someone who has been forced into a mold his entire life with no real choice on his part and he's trying to break out of it, but he struggles to fully free himself of it, if he even can. I really empathize with his struggle to break out of the conditioning placed upon him and I think his reactions to it are believable, I went through several phases that he went through. As a result I also share a lot of his views on personal freedom and self determination.

Goldenblood I empathize with because because I know what it's like to have to make hard choices, which often involve doing bad things, for good reasons because the circumstances force you to. I also respect him because he's someone capable of getting large and influential things done in a system that would have strangled attempts that went through normal channels. He is a good, but flawed leader, that struggled with balancing optimism and cynicism. I can respect that.

Glory I empathize with for reasons similar to P-21. They're both people who have been put in boxes and they're trying to break out and be their own person. She is someone that is tired of being considered weak, helpless, and needing protecting even though she is more than capable of standing on her own, most of the time. Everyone needs support sometimes. I can really relate to her struggle.

That's a recurring complaint about the EQD pre-readers.

What's "funny" is that apparently they are so bad at it that they also do it to the author of one of the most famous pony fanfiction out there, who helped generate quit a lot of traffic on their website a few years ago.

If it helps, from what I heard EQD isn't as big as it used to be, while there's a number of other pony newsites which have emerged. Can't remember their names, but I suppose other people here may know them.

Speaking of Empathy and Sympathy and all that. Were we supposed to sympathize with Deus? A mother not letting her rapist see her baby sounds about right to me.

Especially if you have another parent in their life. It seems to me Shujaa had adopted Peppermint. I think that's what the "She prefers her mother" (Paraphrasing) line from Vanity and Shujaa being in that picture were about.

I wonder if that's what Rampage's stripes are about, like they're some sort of adoption thing. I know they're not dyed on. It's silly to think the phoenix talisman would regenerate dye. But if they were magically applied (I think that's the deal with the proditors.) they may come back. Otherwise Shujaa would have to get them redone everytime her side was damaged.

You could try resubmitting it. Whoever looked at it may just have a problem with the type of story you're writing or the genre it's in. Maybe you'll have more luck with somebody else.

Its official policy is to support various bullshit SJW activities. Well, at least it was a year ago.

As in, in the eyes of the people that go there, we're all probably "rape supporters" and [insert as many idiotic attempts at insulting someone as you like].

Yeah, so if Somber's new story is anything like PH, it's certainly going to feel very icky to them. (disclaimer: still haven't given it a chance yet)

You might want to give it a bit more polishing before resubmission. When I looked at it a week or two ago there were a couple of typos here and there, and I felt that some of the narration felt a little staccato'd (found periods where I was expecting commas). I found the dark element came on too quickly with the sudden assault and little to no explanation was given for Stormy's fighting ability (the reference to the "bad side of the clouds" being the only hint to some sort of back-streets experience). It's pretty good overall, but it feels like it needs some work.

I most relate to Blackjack, [for reasons I'm not interested in leaving here indefinitely].

I could probably find more limited ways in which I empathize with much of the rest of the cast (and there's a lot of Blackjack/Goldenblood overlap), but I think that that's where it's strongest.

Somber wrote:Submitted Broken Accords to EQD and got shot down.  Their reason... well, they didn't give one.  Nor give me recommendations on how to improve it.
Since May, that's been their policy. It's too bad, but seems to be the only workable system since the alternative is stories sitting in the queue for months.

Somber wrote:I know.  I'm just a little surprised.  It's the first time in a long time I've gotten a rejection.
Well, for EQD it'd also be the first time in almost three years you got an acceptance. There've been a lot of changes; it seems like they don't let as much though anymore, and my impression is it's more slanted towards one-shots than multiparters than it used to be, but it's not like I have data or inside knowledge to back that up.

swicked wrote:

I dunno.
At a guess, I'd say that if the issue is content the fairly graphic description of the corpse in the first chapter might be crossing their lines for gore, but then again I'd hope that they'd at least say what the problem was if it was a matter of content rather than another factor.

Well, you don't need to agree to find the situation sympathetic.

Well, if it's still the goal, I think the flowchart has some answers.
