SMITE: Battle it Out With the Gods

Calling all fans of MOBAs, ancient mythology, and fun in general. Smite is an awesome third-person multiplayer battle arena where players choose gods from several different pantheons to compete. It is a pretty easy game to get into and is a hell of a lot of fun, despite the game still being in open beta.

There are a variety of gods to choose from, and new ones are added every 2-3 weeks. There is a free rotation as with LOL and some other MOBAs, as well as a few select free characters for anyone who plays the game. The pantheons included at the moment are Hindu, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Norse, Chinese, and Mayan.

The free gods are:

Neith

The Ancient Egyptian goddess known as the weaver of fate. She is a ranged physical hunter with high crowd-control and high sustain. Best played as a ranged attacker. Her abilities allow her to do high amounts of ranged damage with a mix of control and an escape. Her ultimate allows her to stun and do a significant amount of damage to any single target on the map that she or her team can see.

Ymir

The Norse Father of the Frost Giants. He is a melee magical guardian with high crowd control and high defense. Best played as a support tank, using his abilities to control the battlefield. His ultimate does high amounts of damage in a large area around him.

Ra

The Egyptian god of the Sun. Ra is a ranged magical mage with high power and high sustain. He is best as a ranged attacker, with a variety or powerful spells, including his ultimate where he shoots fucking lasers from his face.

Thor

Norse god of thunder. Thor is a melee physical assassin with high single target damage and medium crowd control. He is good as an attacker, and can sneak up on enemies from above, using his ultimate to smash them with his hammer.

Guan Yu

Chinese Saint of War. Guan Yu is a melee physical warrior with high mobility and high sustain. He is a good attacker, with several quick moving offensive abilities. His ultimate summons his faithful warhorse, which he rides for a short time, stunning enemies while he attacks them.

It's actually pretty fun to play, I'd recommend you try it. For those, who got used to LoL - it would be even easier to get used to Smite.

Yes. There are practice matches where you can play against bots. I personally prefer playing against players though.

I'm having a lot more fun in this than I did trying LoL.

Well my first match with Artemis quickly became the most intense 42 minutes of my life.

Started of as a 5v5, then quickly became 3v5 after 2 of my guys left.

We lost all out towers but the lower right one, a teammate wants us to quit, I refuse, and then proceed to solo destroy their first mid tower, then 2 left towers while my 2 teammates distracted them in mid and right.

We managed to push the enemy back, and the enemy once again focused on mid,  giving me enough time to clear the right lane, and for my team to kill all the enemy gods.
We got the minotaur to half health before getting killed.
I told my team to focus on mid, since I knew the enemy team was going to go down that lane (they did. :P), and I sneaked in through the right lane, and kill the minotaur.


I am still shaking from that victory, and Artemis is now my new favourite god to play.

A practice match which felt longer than it actually was taught me one thing; Ra is an asshole. After taking a few seconds to ponder his tactics and where his power came from, his weakness finally dawned on me. Make him waste his abilities, and don't get too close to him. If you happen to get low on health, his slow will make your life hell. As Ares I waited for him to get to half-mana or nearly so, then I went in on him. He couldn't put up much resistance. For lulz I even yanked him into tower range a few times.

Ra is pretty good at soloing a lane, but if you know what to do , you can wreck him. Be wary though, as sometimes he will just use his abilities so he can run away faster, that is his passive effect.

Whelp, My heart finally settled down after that last match. We lost, but goddamn was it close. Probably only due to me too. I was the only one on my team that had a positive KD, with 20 to 7. Everyone else did way, way worse. I managed to wreck all of the enemy towers and one of their phoenixes when the rest of my team wiped and I had to run pack to base. Ended up loosing.

Sure. I'd love to get some matches in, but it probably not be that many, as I will need a little bit of sleep.
