Yes. Many headcanons were shattered, but such is life. Still, loved the scenes with Luna's and Celestia's past - particularly the NMM one.
Animation's gotten even better. Those light effects at some points, like in the stained glass room. Those were cool.
Tentacle r34 is inbound. It's gonna happen.

I think there were two kinds? That one which made those dark crystals grow in the S3 opener and I think Celestia used something else to make them go away... Or I'm fairly sure there was an explanation to it. I just can't rememeber.

The only thing Zecora said needed to be used to change the potion was "alicorn magic".
...so I have to assume that that's what that was. Pure alicorn magic may very well be that evil-looking. Might also explain why the alicorn amulet always corrupts its user.

So what did you guys actually think about the episode? I thought it was pretty good. My only complaints on the first viewing are that pinkie's humor kind of ruins some scenes and there are inconsistencies on the strength of the vines.
I liked what they did with Discord. He wasn't quite good, but not quite evil either. He remains a highly suspicious wild card that knows how to phrase things to save his skin. The season-long arc with the box looks promising as well. New adventures where the solution isn't "blast baddie with elements of harmony."
I know some people were nervous about the "sparkleboom" at the end, but I really didn't mind it. Twilight's name is very significant considering her mentors represent celestial bodies, but I'm sure that has been discussed before.
About the "Alicorn magic", wasn't that very similar to the magic used by / related to Sombra? Maybe he is slated to come back as a posthumous character and give him more depth and background. Certain things suggest that it may be plausible, but those are spoilers that I don't want to post here.

I was watching it with my little sister so Pinkie's humor didn't bother me as much as it might have otherwise. Having Discord as an anti-villain or whatever he's supposed to be was excellent, I hope they keep it up over the entire season/series. As for the rest it looks to be quite the promising season.
As for the 'sparkleboom', my headcanon is that it was some kind spell Twilight cast rather than an actual sonic rainboom sort of thing.
As for the 'alicorn magic', hopefully we'll learn more as the season goes on.

- Headcanons were indeed shattered, but that is to be expected when dealing with historic events that were previously only sketched out.
And honestly, did anyone really expect the "sort-of-evil-overlord Celestia vs. picture-perfect-pony-princess Luna" scenario that is so popular, especially with the SO and NLR community?
With the Elements the headcanons were a bit more diverse, but I don't think this was a bad way to do it.
My thoughts on the overall episode. The pacing was nice, which is always a good thing, especially after MMC.

Really liked how Twilight's struggle with princesshood was handled (and still don't like Rarity's stance on this sort of thing).
Kinda disappointed that Twi isn't Celly's student anymore, what is she gonna send her from Ponyville from now on, all the reports on how Ponyville is doing economically or politically should be handled by the mayor. Twilight's gonna go crazy.

I of course assume she's gonna return to and stay in Ponyville at some point (next episode perhaps).
As for Alicorn Magic (aside from the word itself being used more and more in the show, which is cool), there is sort of a tiny plothole here. I assumed that particular kind was dark magic not related to alicorns in general. Sombra was definitely not an alicorn and neither was Twilight when she first used it, so there's kinda leap in logic here.
Celestia did use a "light magic" in the Crystal Empire episodes to cleanse the corruption in the throne room, so I presume there are at least two sides to it (balance, harmony and all that stuff), but that still doesn't explain how it is connected to Alicorns when non-alicorns can use it. And neither is there explained why Twilight used the dark alicorn magic in particular.
Question, questions, your move, Hasbro.

Then there's of course the matter of Twilight drinking white stuff from a bottle, I can already see the r34 pics along with the Everfree tentacles/vines (seriously, I can literally see them right now on Derpibooru).Â
Now the flashbacks, not sure if I got it right, but Celestia had Elements of Magic, Kindness and Generosity, and Luna had Loyalty, Honesty and Laughter. No idea if their elements were tied to them the way they were to Mane 6, but at least in Celestia's case I think they fit her quite well.
We also finally got some sort of magic fight, but it was still soooooo short, they need to loosen up a bit and give us some proper magic duel fight scene.

Discord was awesome, nothing to add there. Except that now he's manipulating Mane 6 in the right way, even if all the trouble was his fault in the first place. Hope they're gonna make more use of him from now on, especially now that they no longer have the elements to control him I wonder how he will turn out.
I'm kinda glad they (sort of) got rid of the main deus ex machina of the series and as a result revealed a subplot for the entire season.

Another mishap on the side of the creators, the way Celestia and Luna react hwne they are freed. They're not suprised, not even phased by what happened, they acted like they knew all along. Like it was just another freakin test or something.
The supposed 'Sonic Sparkboom' didn't even occur to me really, I assumed it was magic considering Twilight barelly learned how to fly, she shouldn't be able to perform sonic anything quite yet.
So much for my humble opinion, it wasn't the best two-parter, I still like Canterlot Wedding the most, but it was definitely better than what MMC gave us. I may return with further opinionz after re-watching it properly.
PS: My headcannon with time-travelling Twilight sealing NMM and creating infinite-loop paradox was ruined, but I suppose that would be to mary sue-ish.Â

Finally got around to watching it now.
So...
Over all I like the premier. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season will contain. Got a good season long set up going with that ending. And since it's a full season they can spread it out over the remaining 24 episodes. 22 I mean, since the finale is probably gonna be a two parter as well.
So...
- my thoughts:
Seemed to be an animation bump for these two episodes. Not complaining, those are always great.
Lot of Headcannon being shaken up this go round it seemed. Like how long Nightmare Moon's reign was, who had which elements, where the elements came from, etc.
The moment I saw Discord munching on the black seeds in the flashback I knew he was behind what was going on now.
Over all I'm okay with the episode. The weakest part in my opinion is the
 "We think you should head back Princess Twilight?"
 "Are you sure?"
 "Yes."
 "Okay..."
Five minutes later---Â "I shouldn't have agreed to leave them."

Though you could argue that Discord simply offered a very effective and helpful secondary perspective on the issue that was overall much more similar to Twilight's mindset than what the Mane 5 came up with.
 But one slip-up is still better than what MMC did, and there is a ton of small things like that one throughout the seasons anyway.

Hm… Part of me was hoping that the Princesses would still be missing at the end of the episode and we'd be left with a cliffhanger of Equestria in crisis.  Still, we've a mystery box!

Wait... Everything happened inside a year? O.o Very active aren't they?
Oh look. Horrible growths coming out of the Everfree. And no one thought to checkup on the Zebra living in there, to at least find out if she's ok or if she knows anything about it.
A Zebra, having a potion only alicorns can access on hand.
Does turning into a princess make an individual hold the idiot ball? Seriously, every princess so far has been taken out rather quickly. When Luna technically renounced princess-hood and became Nightmare Moon, then she was badass for that tiny bit.
Why doesn't Twilight use more teleporting in place of flight? I mean even teleporting upwards and then gliding would be very useful for traveling.
It really bugs me that everyone was so non-nonchalant in this premiere, but then again, with every disaster so far, I guess they get used to it. Princesses were rather calm for being captured and trapped.
Guards suck. Period. They need to get their act together because they're all rather treated as a joke instead of any kind of threat.
